Why do minors pay taxes in the US?

If minors can't run for public office, or even vote in elections, why are they subject to the same taxes? Wasn't this one of the reasons we started the American Revolution?

Update:

Sorry, Mark, I was unaware that minorities were still denied voting rights here.

Does Barrack Obama ring a bell? How about Condaleeza Rice? the mayor of Los Angeles is hispanic. How about Colin Powell? Arnold Swarzenneger is the Governor of California and he's an immigrant. I'm guessing these influential figures never crossed your mind. Did they? All citizens of this country are created equal, therefore, all citizens of this counrty should pay taxes.

Oh, you are talking about illegal immigrants. Why didn't you say so? This is an easy one. Does the word ILLEGAL mean anything to you? That would be like allowing Europeans to vote for the American president. Or better yet, allowing Americans vote for the Mexican president. Or are you talking about people under 18? Minors aren't allowed to do a lot of things. Their job is to get an education so when they are of the legal age, they can make the proper decisions when they vote.

  • You pay taxes because your employer pays taxes on you. Most of us have done it and that is just how it is. Furthermore, most kids are in school until 18 and require a work permit, since education should be their first priority. Try babysitting or dog walking if you are so concerned with paying taxes (under the table money).

In addition, you do not need to pay federal or state taxes unless you earn more than $600/year (amount may have gone up). If you haven't earned this much, you will get it back. You should have also claimed "exempt" on your W-2. Talk to a tax professional to find any other loop-holes you may not be aware of.

But minors are only minors for what, two years? (You have to be 16 to work.) I would laugh if you made this same post two years from now.

So, you pay a pittance in taxes. So what? Do you want something for nothing?

No, if you are a student, you don't pay taxes. If you are a minor, not a student, paying taxes, why aren't you in school?

Dude, you pay taxes for the protection of the US military so that you have the right to fail out of school.

Most "minors' that are ins chool usually get most of what they pay in back. So they really dont pay much if anything at all.
