Algebra elimination?

Can someone please help me with my daughter's algebra problem?

Here goes:

x+2y=8 and 2x-y+6

I need to solve for x and y.

We were told the answers were: x=4 y=2, but how is that so?

I came up with x=2 and y=5.

Update:

sorry....was a typo, supposed to be an equal sign

    Equations:

    1. x + 2y = 8

    2. 2x - y = 6

    *Solve for "x" or "y" in either equation. Let's solve for "x" in the 1st equations.

    First: subtract "2y" from both sides....

    x + 2y - 2y = 8 - 2y

    x = 8 - 2y

    Sec: replace "8-2y" with the x-variable in the 2nd equation.....

    2(8 - 2y) - y = 6

    2(8) + 2(-2y) - y = 6

    16 - 4y - y = 6

    16 - 5y = 6

    *Subtract "16" from both sides....

    16 - 16 - 5y = 6 - 16

    - 5y = - 10

    *Isolate "y" on one side --- divide both terms by "-5"....

    - 5y/-5 = - 10/-5

    y = 10/5

    y = 2

    Third: replace "2" with the y-variable in the 1st equation.....

    x + 2(2) = 8

    x + 4 = 8

    *Isolate "x" on one side --- subtract "4" from both sides...

    x + 4 - 4 = 8 - 4

    x = 4

    Solution (4, 2)

    You don't have two equations, but I will assume that the second set is supposed to be 2x-y=6.

    The first equation can be rewritten to x=8-2y. This is plugged into the second equation which is 2(8-2y)-y=6. This becomes -5y=-10 or y=2. Plug that into the rewritten first equation and x=8-4=4.

    you have mistaken the second equation. It is 2x - y = 6

    x + 2y = 8 first equation

    2x - y = 6 second equation multiplied by 2

    4x - 2y = 12 second equation

    x + 2y = 8 first equation (add first and second equation)

    5x = 20

    x = 20/5 = 4

    take first equation

    x + 2y = 8 (substituting the value of x=4)

    4 + 2y =8

    2y = 8 - 4

    2y = 4

    y = 2

    x = 4; y = 2

    1.x+2y=8

    2. 2x-y=6 (I hope you meant =6 and not +6)

    Let's solve for y first, since it's easier. In order to cancel out the y's, we have to make them opposites, so we multiply the 2nd equation by 2. This is what we get:

    1. x+2y=8

    2. 4x-2y=12

    We can now cancel out the y's. Just add the x's and 8 and 12 now, and we get this:

    5x=20

    Solving for x, we get:

    x=4

    Now we plug the 4 back into either original equation. I'm choosing the 1st one, since it's easier.

    4+2y=8

    Now minus 4 from both sides to get y alone:

    2y=4

    Now divide the 2 from both sides to solve for y, and we get:

    y=2

    Therefore, your answers are x=4 and y=2.

    x+2y=8....(1)

    2x-y=6.....(2)

    Multiplying eqn. 1 by 2 and eqn 1 by 1 we get

    2x+4y=16

    2x-y =6

    subtracting 5y=10

    =>y=2

    putting the value of y in eqn no 1,we get

    x+2*2=8

    =>x+4=8

    =>x=8-4=4

    first solve for x in terms of y:

    x+2y =8. x= 8-2y. Then plug this new definition of x into the 2nd equation.

    Unfortunately your 2nd equation doesn't have an = sign, so something isn't right. But hope that helps.

    allow s = type of strings w = type of winds The equations are s + w = ninety one 4s = 9w remedy for s. s = ninety one - w change in 4s = 9w 4(ninety one - w) = 9w 364 - 4w = 9w 364 = 13w w = 364/13 = 28 s = ninety one - w = ninety one - 28 = sixty 3 So the range of strings is sixty 3 and the range of winds is 28. in case you divide both one among those by technique of seven you'll stumble on you get the 9 to 4 ratio wanted.

    x+2y=8

    2x-y+6

    Multiply the second equation by 2, so that when we add the y's cancel

    x + 2y = 8

    4x -2y = 12

    ---------------

    5x = 20

    x =4

    so sub 4 in for x

    4 + 2y = 8

    2y = 4

    y = 2

  • 1 decade ago

    Multiply first equation by 2.

    2x + 4y = 16

    2x - y = 6

    Subtract equations.

    5 y = 10

    y = 2

    Substitute 2 for y in first equation.

    x + 4 = 8

    x = 4

    There's no = sign in the second expression, so there's no way to "solve" this. Unless that was a typo.
