Should I install the new windows or stick with xp in the computer I plan on building?

From what I have seen so far come into my shop, I would honestly suggest going with Windows XP as some manufacturers are slow with Vista support for their drivers and software. I have been testing Ultimate edition for the past several months and still have yet to get sound and modem drivers for my laptop not to mention some software still doesnt like installing into it. In my professional opinion, I would suggest holding off Vista for another four months at least, or another option which is what I did with my laptop, is create a dual boot partition and install both and when Vista has enough support just delete the XP partition.

On a side note, from a technicians perspective, that although Vista is extremely pretty and has more security, that security comes at the cost of decreased usability. Just something to think about when deciding between the two.

I would get vista if you plan on building a decent computer. You can always disable all the visual effects if it makes your computer run slow. I have vista and im loving it. dont buy the expensive store version if you get it though. go to www.newegg.com and search for the OEM version. Its the same thing but alot cheaper cuase its not in a fancy box.

Yes there may be some bugs but They are fixed quickly and I havent seen any problems yet. If you ever want to have Vista get it right away and save yourself the hassle of upgrading later on.

Stick with XP. Vista is new and has too many compatibility issues. Ubuntu is a mess of compatibility so I wouldn't touch that either. Besides, Vista really doesn't do anything better than XP. It just looks pretty and sucks up five times as much memory.

Don't bother with Vista yet.

I have it & prefer to use XP Media center Edition a lot more.

... and working for a manufacturer of PCs I have access to every Vista version for free .... still I use XP MCE instead.

Vista will not allow you to burn copyright protected material nor will it allow you to install certain programs downloaded from the web.

It's more beneficial to Microsoft & its partners than it is to you & I.

It is mostly eye candy used to lure people into buying it. Lots of bells .... lots of whistles & shiny objects ... little true improvement over XP Pro.

Sure .. there are advanced featrures, however, these are negligable.

Could you build your own microwave oven?With building your own computer you would need the software drivers for all of the various components.It is very difficult to find and install these drivers if you even could.The BIOS is written by a Physicist.I doubt that the limited BIOS that is seen would even recognize the installed components.Purchase a new computer with a warranty and you'll be fine.

Remember all the bugs that were in xp when it first came out? I'tl be the same with vista just you wait. I'd stick with xp for now if i were you, at least until vista service pack 1 comes out. which it will.

Boot from the cd and choose the restoration deploy. that's unpredictable, it may re-deploy with each and all of the present drivers intact, ensuing in BSOD crashes. greater valuable would be to uninstall ALL hardware drivers mutually as the previous device continues to be in use.

Stick with XP & dual boot with UBUNTU.. GOOGLE this "windows vista problems and issues.

ps xp home has more than vista home basic has anyway!!!
