nature in honolulu?
I am going to honolulu soon, for about 10 days. I know it is very touristy but my biggest interest is the nature. I have heard that the island of Kauai is great for this, but am I going to be able to get some great nature experiences when I go to Oahu? I plan on finding some hiking trails or tours, and try to experience the truest sense of Hawaii even though I am going to be the farthest from it!

Honolulu is the capital city of Hawaii, but there are still plenty of beautiful natural places on Oahu. Whether you rent a car or ride the bus, it is easy to get around. Manoa Valley has gorgeous waterfalls and hiking trails--- near Honolulu. The Pali (the mountains east of Honolulu) are gorgeous--- and also have hiking trail. Going up to north shore there are many trails. Hauula loop trail takes you through many varied mini-forests and gives you a mountain view of the ocean and land etc. In the south, Waimanalo has beautiful natural areas. There are state parks and preserves, camping places, etc... And that's not even mentioning all the wonderful beaches, snorkeling places, etc.
Just get out of the city--- Waikiki etc--- and you'll find more natural beauty than you'll have time to explore. As far as I'm concerned, I have no use for Waikiki--- the beach is crowded and the water has a slick of suntan lotion on it! Get out of "town" and explore the "country".
Even up in the middle of the island there is a fantastic botanical garden--
Hawaiians love the 'aina' and strive to preserve it.

Kauai, Maui and the Big Island are great areas for nature.
In Honolulu, you can visit Manoa Falls. Outside of Honolulu, there is the Aiea Loop Trail and also a nice walk to the Makapuu Light House between Sandy Beach and Waimanalo. There are also some hiking companies that take tourists to various locations on the Island. When you get here, you can purchase a book on Hiking trails on Oahu.

Go up to the top of Diamond Head.
Go to the other side of the Island to Chinaman's Hat
Go Hang out at North Shore and watch the surfers
or Head to Hanuma Bay and Snorkel.

To add to what Heather and Rani said, there is also a hiking trail in Maunawili on the windward side of the island. When I was a teenager we hiked up mount Olomana. I'm not sure of they opened the stairway to heaven yet. These are all on the windward side of the island. You have to go snorleing at Haunama bay and see all the beautiful tropical fish.

basically head into the opposite direction of waikiki. the further north you drive the more trees you gonna see.
although i do recommend going up Tantalus at least once to watch the sunset over the city, it may not be very naturey but it is a nice view of the city.
