Cleaning a Fencing Foil?

What would I use to clean a #5 fencing foil blade? I have steel wool, but i was wondering if i should use a metal polish or anything on the blade. Your thoughts? Thank you.

Update:

By the way, I am dealing with practice foils, not electric foils.

For a practice weapon steel wool is fine.

Is your problem because your foil isn't lighting on a hit? In that case, make sure your insulating wire is intact and your tape is secure (also checking that the tip and barrel are threaded/screwed together properly). You can really use any product for metal cleaning, but the lower the abrasive the better. Make sure not to use one that coats because you may not get lights on your opponent's lame because of the coating (conductor problems). You can also clean the tip by unscrewing and swabbing a q-tip inside, just be careful when you take it off because of the inner components - they will go flying if you don't have them under control. However it has been quite some time since I have fenced or even held a foil, there are probably some fabulous new specialized products out now.

Good luck, and take care! :)
