What is the nature of the self?

It seems to me that the most elementary nature of the self is to experience existence as an intractible dualism: self versus everything else.

It began in mystery, and it will end in mystery, but what a savage and beautiful country lies in between.The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Mysterious is our nature, we always search for something that is not understood or known about.As we acquire more knowledge, things do not become more comprehensible, but more mysterious.
