Can a virus infect a computer only with opening email?

I know that opening the infected attachment of an email can infect the computer. I read somewhere that opening some infected emails infect the computer, only by opening themselves. Is it true?

Yes that is true, if the virus is embedded in the body of the message it will run along with anything else (such as text and photos) when you open the e-mail. Also, they can be programmed to automatically download themselves from an attachment when the message they are attached to is accessed.

Yes, that's excatly how it happens the sender can either type a malicious code and send it as an email or attatches a malicious code to the email sent to you and when you open the email it allows the virus to escape thus infecting your computer. All the sender needs is to get you to open your email. If you ever got email that looked normal but once you opened it and scrolled all the way to the end of the message you seen strange writing, like someone just made up a bunch of crap, then guess what, you were just hit with a malicious code that infected your computer.

If some guy Threatened to send you a virus if you did not send him "nude" photos i would send his email address along with his coments to the fbi. He sounds like he may be a pedofile. Another thing he may be a danger to young kids. If you know whow this person is you do not have to tell them who you are. The other thing If you are concerned about emails block any pictures set your email for text only. You never want to open a email from a unknown sender, that is how they send some of these viruses and other trojans. The other way is through adult web sites or "porn"sites almost all free sites like that lure (mostly men) people to click on the site then that click actavates a worm. I hope this helps you.

I have never heard of a virus that is launched simply by opening an e-mail. It is true that some e-mail programs allow you to auto-open attachments in preview mode and that would launch the virus, but unless someone provides a reliable reference to a cert/virus site, I will continue to believe it is not possible.

If you are using the "preview" pane in Outlook Express, yes.

You can turn the preview off for increased security, but if you make sure you have all the updates installed, then you would have to be exceptionally unlucky to be infected as these holes are normally patched fairly soon after they become known.

    I hope this helps!

no it shouldn't it will only if you open a link or an attachment or something like that I wont if you look at it then close but my advice if you don't know who it is don't open it there getting smarter every day so it may just happen

Yes. Viruses are tricky and horrible. You should never open up an email that has been flagged for a virus or from someone you don't know. Not worth it.

THE TRUTH, YES, WORM VIRUSES ARE VERY COMMON, THEY REPLICATE AS YOU OPEN EMAIL AND CAN EVEN SEND IT TO ANY EMAIL YOU STORE AND THEN SEND IT OUT TO THAT PERSON, WHO THEN SENDS IT OUT TO THEM....DADAD.DA.DA. YEAH A NASTY F****R OR YOUCAN GET A DATA SENDING TROJAN THAT INFECTS WHEN YOU OPEN MAIL AS WELL BUT TROJAN DO NOT REPLICATE THEMSELVES. VIRUSES ARE IN THE - EXE. FILES. EXECUTIVE FILES YOU HAVE AND IF THEY ARE SENT OR DOWNLOADED AND YOU OPEN THEN, YOU GET A VIRUS IF THERE IS ONE. NEARLY ALL VIRUSES ARE BY HUMAN HANDS WHEN YOU CLICK TO OPEN A FILE AND SOME COME IN UNDETECTED OR BY IP PAYLOADS OR BACKDOOR METHODS. HOPE THIS HELPS. BUT NEVER OPEN AN EMAIL YOU DON'T KNOW ANYWAY.
