What is the purpose of a belly button?

Update:

Yes people, I know it was attached to the umblical cord.

You are really not answering my question of WHAT is the purpose of the belly button after you are already born?

Update 2:

Ok so how come some belly buttons are in and some belly buttons out?

The belly button is where the pit of the stomach was located. Most pits are lost early in life with all the diaper changing.

OK! The pit of your stomach is where you have and uneasy feeling when things are not going well. If you still have the pit, you will never get that feeling.

Other ideas are expressed in the link below, but I still have my pit in a little jar with some clear smelly liquid to preserve it.

Once you're born, it serves no useful purpose whatsoever. The belly button or navel is just the remains of the umbilical cord that provided nutrition and oxygen to you before you were born and still in your mother's womb. After birth, the cord is cut, and what is left over is your belly button. I thought everyone knew this.....

Your belly button is basically a scar left from the umbilical cord connected to your mother when you were in the womb. It serves no purpose after birth but is the only thing that kept you alive and growing before birth.

And, from what I gather, it's also a nifty place to put some jewelry nowadays

None, after you are born it heals into what you see down there.

Get a belly button ring & then that will be it's purpose, go to Cancun or Cabo on spring break this year & it can serve as a salt or alcohol resevoir. Also a new purpose. Be creative

    Good luck.

Has anybody on here heard of search engines??? Ask.com or Google work very well.

None - it is what's left of the umbilical cord which

connected the person to his or her mother

during gestation (while the mother was pregnant).

When somebody is born, they "Cut the cord"

and when the body heals, that is what's left.

Serves no purpose after birth but we'd look funny as heck without one.

so the baby can get nutrients when it's in the mother through the umbilical cord.

The belly button represents where the embryo/foetus connected with its mother during pregnancy.....so it reminds us of that!

Our umbilical cord was attached there as fetuses, bringing us nourishment from our mothers.

    i used to wonder this

it is where your umbilical cord was attached to your mom while you were in her belly..
