If Libertarians registered as Libertarians?

As you might have guessed by now reading some of the Political Questions and Answers, there are quite a few convervative libertarians currently registered as Republicans, to the point where I am wondering if the term "Moderate Republican" really means "conservative Libertarian".

Obviously we are starting to get dissatisfied with that choice. If the Libertarians actually registered Libertarian, and left the Republican Party (we are not Democrats either), how might that effect the elections in 2008?

Update:

Thanks Maxx, that is why I threw the floor open for discussion on the topic. You have to wonder what percentage of the Rebulican party is Libertarian though. If it is big enough, as someone else suggested, it might at least make Libertarians the deal breaker. I am no more interested in socialism than you are for obvious reasons.

I am a Libertarian who is registered as republican. I am registered with the Republicans because I believe it is better to get 80% of what I want then 100% of nothing. I believe that the nothing I speak of is what I would get if we split the party. It would mean defeat for my point of view and victory for the Socialists.

I DO NOT believe that the "moderate" Republicans are actually Libertarians. From what I have seen they are opportunists that would register with any party to further their careers.

I think that was shown best when the "gang of 14", 7 Republicans and 7 democrats), made the shady backroom deal to circumvent democracy when the Congress was voting on the filibuster issue.

Libertarians would become one of the top 2 parties and the Republics would become one of the also ran.

It would keep you from voting in the primaries in many states.

I wish all parties would hold open primaries.
