i have a 48 yr old male friend who quit caring about his appearance. how do i get him to start caring again?

my friend is over 6' and fairly thin. he doesn't smell or anything but he doesn't comb his hair when he goes somewhere and his overall appearance is dirty and unkept. his clothes are dirty looking, outdated, too small and sometimes are even women' jeans. i have tried to tactfully bring it to his attention and he'll just laugh and then he'll lay the blame somewhere but will show up the next time at a restuarant uncombed again.

One of my family members went through this after the death of his parents. When did this change?? Ask him about it, " I remember when you took so much pride in your appearance, Now you don't. What changed?" I tried tactfully at first but it did not help. I told him we needed to have a serious talk and I stuck to my guns remembering his feelings at the same time.

Was his change after a specific incident? I brought it up directly and there was a bit of tension for a few days. However, he understood that I was concerned and I helped him pick out a few things and I ensure that he gets his hair cut. I think he found my assistance helpful because he did not know where to start. He also feels better about himself now.
