Am I being irresponsible?

I do not have health insurance.

Health insurance is sold primarily on the premise that unfortunate things will happen to us or we may acquire some dreadful illness which we have no control over. In other words they want us to believe that we are "victims" of life.

I believe spending my money on such a negative concept, or my acting on it out of fear that they may be right only would add more energy to that negative suggestion and thereby would actually increase the possibility of things occuring.

I've learned by always having a plan or image for my future, I rarely have unexpected negative occurences. When something does occur that I didn't expect, I always except responsibilty for somehow attracting it for my learning.

Do you think I am being irresponsible?

I feel the same way about auto insurance; I pay and pay and pay but never see the results - so why.....................

I guess any type of insurance is there 'just in case' something really big happens and then we have a safety net to save us.

Personally, I feel the only ones benefiting from all of this 'insurance' is the 'big wigs'.

I guess I can understand your logic, but going against an institution as big and rich and insurance alone is not going to change anything.

In my life, only a couple bad things have happened medically to my family. My brothers were born eight weeks premature. Their medical bills totalled almost 200,000 dollars. My mom had breast cancer and needed a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy. I don't know how much that was, though I am sure it was expensive. Add on top of that the fact that five of the six of us need glasses, three of us need braces/other orthodontic services, and various other heath things. My point is if we had not had insurance, we would not be able to afford any of the wonderful things we have, because we'd still be paying for medical bills.

And the thing is, we're a relatively lucky family. My mom's cancer was caught early and wasn't long and drawn out over years like some people, and my brothers were totally healthy after their stay in the premature ward, with no lasting health effects.

Insurance may make you think that bad things happen to everyone, but if you have insurance, those bad things will not be insurmountable. Having insurance does not make me worry about something happening to my car or my house or my body. I think I would be more afraid to do anything if I knew one wrong step could land me in a lifetime of struggle. I don't know about you, but when I'm afraid, I make more mistakes than usual.

So, I do think you're being sort of irresponsible. But it is your choice. I hope whichever way you choose, you will never have any need for insurance!

Rather than irresponsible, I think foolish would be a better term. A possibility is a calculated risk and definitely not a negative suggestion. You definitely need health insurance. You said you RARELY have unexpected negative occurrences. The word rarely is the best reason I can think of for having insurance because you never know when you are going to have an accident or get sick.

You are apparently a smart person and you know it. But from the way you sound, you have overestimated your intelligence.

I think others will have to support you through taxes or contributions through churches and other organizations should the unfortunate, unforeseen occur unless you have an immense nest egg for such purposes. If this should happen and you have not planned and cannot afford your care on your own then you are not the only victim..you have put the burden on society causing society to be a victim as well. In this case would you just raise your hand and say "I did it ; I'm responsible" ? Is that in your opinion accepting responsibility? If I am understanding this situation correctly, then yes I do think you are being irresponsible.

You are only being irresponsible if you have others depending on you, i.e., your children. If not, more power to you. Most people want to have some sort of assurance that in case something bad does happen it will not wreck them financially. A catastrophic illness can wipe out your savings and leave you unable to work for a period of time. Some things cannot be planned no matter how much we would like.

I agree with previous answers that say that it depends upon your commitments to others. If you are single, then you may be unwise to not have insurance, but you are not irresponsible.

Insurance is the flip side of gambling (you can read about utility curves if you wish). You get insurance with the idea of dealing with the risk of an improbable event. It would be of great value to you should you be unluck enough to need health insurance for a costly medical need.

I strongly urge you obtain "major medical" insurance so that you can deal with a major health crisis without risking your financial well-being or destroying your physical health.

    dude,

youre not being irresponsible...youre just being unrealistic!

the only negative concept you WILL have is trying to pay that $100,000 medical bill when some drunk driver hits you in his car, declares bankruptcy and you can not get a penny from him.

the only 'victim' of life is you!!! if you dont understand what i am saying...you truly are a clueless clod.

good luck bro because you will need it every freaking second you are alive!

i personally do not care if you have medical insurance or not. youre just a blip on my computer screen. nor do i even remotely care about how your spectacular life will turn out. what i do know is that you WILL be paying for some HUGE medical bill one day for the rest of your life and all i can say is thank you because that means my insurance premiums will have one less living corpse to pay out for the rest of your breathing existence because one who isnt smart enough to have medical insurance obviously has no idea what life in the real world is about.

hey, did you ever wonder if you wont get hurt when getting hit by a car at 65 mph? hehehe!

We can only be our own insurance company up to a point. Unless you are very wealthy, catastrophic care comes to mind. Cancer, organ transplant, bone marrow donor, dialysis, any number of things. Good insurance is a must. I hope you never need it. But as the Boy Scouts say "Be Prepared". As to being irresponsible, no, naive, yes.

  • 1 decade ago

I think you are naive. People get sick. It is a fact of life and if something happens to you, it will wipe out your savings and you will likely still have bills. Go ahead and spend your money as you see fit, but remember that you won't always be young and healthy and once you have health problems, you will find it difficult if not impossible to get heath insurance.

No, you are being youthful and full of optimism that somebody will take care of you if you get hurt or sick. In the past this was true but now with so many medical facilities going bankrupt because of the illegals, if you get injured or sick you'll be screwed. Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse!
