When did Nurses in Hospitals stop wearing the Nurses hats and uniforms including the white stockings Miss it

I remember my sister graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1974, all spiffy in her starched white nurse's uniform. (sigh)

It was a short while after that nurses and other health-care providers started wearing the more practical scrubs. Now it's hard to tell an RN from a nurse's aide from a housekeeper. Many institutions use different color scrubs to differentiate between skilled nurses and the cleaning staff, but not all, and there's no color-coded standardization. It would be nice if there were some distinguishment, either by color, badge or other insignia.

Health care can be dirty and bloody, so why get all decked out in white so a patient can puke, bleed or crap on you. It is easier to put on a new pair of scubs than to worry so much about how they look. I work in a hospital, and the last thing on our minds is looks...we are there to help the sick.

I believe that started to happen in the late 1970s, early 1980s.
