First, I'm sorry that you lost your pet.

Unfortunately the symptoms you are describing could be caused from a GIANT list of things. And since you say "started out with" I'm assuming other things developed. Without more info, it is impossible to tell. However, regardless of what started the vomiting and diarrhea, those 2 things in conjunction without medical treatment could lead to death in their own right. If your dog was not able to keep hydrated, then they would start suffering from organ failure in a matter of days to a week.

I hope that you took your dog to the vet. If not, then I hope that you can live with the fact that your dog could have been "cured" for as little as an office visit and some meds. My guess is that you are turning to those of us on this board because we tend to "have all the answers". What you don't understand is that we got all of those answers from our vets when we took our own sick pets to the doctor when needed.

I don't want you think that I'm telling you are "bad person", just maybe not that informed of an animal owner...and I'm pretty passionate about proper care and treatment for animals. Getting a pet is not a "right", it is a "responsibility". That responsibility includes caring for all medical issues that come up.

Everyone will say get a necropsy. Here is the thing OLD AGE! With that comes a weakened immune system. With that comes more susceptibility to parasites.

Your pet probably got something that attacked her already weakened immune system. Thats just the way it is.

You need to learn from this to improve yourself the next time.

I am sorry for your lost. My boy is 13yrs. old and I worry a lot about stuff like that.

Some of my things that I do=

    1) purified bottled water, old kidneys have a hard time cleaning system so no drinking any type of water anymore(water puddles on ground)

    2) always clean food and water dish with antibacterial soap after every meal

3)brush teeth everyday. Good dental care may add up to 2 yrs of life to pet

4)mental stimulation. It is important to give the animal regular excersise. But now they realize as in humans mental health is also important. I play little games with him a few times a day so his cognitive skills work.

I also take him to get accupunctures and massages to help stimulate the circulartory system as well as the nervous system

So sorry to hear of your dog getting sick. Fourteen years old is a very old age for a dog. Perhaps she just got too old and her body couldn't survive anymore.

As with many elderly animals, she have had an intestinal disorder or cancer that prevented her from gaining any more nutrition from the food she ate.

I assume giving up means she died. If so, the only one who can accurately answer your question is a vet. Like humans, dogs can get sick for a variety of reasons, diet, allergies, even emotional reactions can cause illness. Her age suggests that she might have survived if she was one instead of 14. Her age along might have caused her to die. Sorry for your loss. Suggest you wait awhile to get another pet. Importantly, do not try to duplicate your lost pet.

I hope she don't chew something not good for her like rat sack my friend dog did that and he was very sick my friend got him to the vet just in time. Another person living below the house in the ganny flat at the time let rat sack out.

My dog was 17 and had the same thing. She had kidney failure. I think it was mainly due to the old age and her body just couldn't handle it anymore.

I'm guessing that since you're asking you never took her to the vet when she was sick.

Without a necropsy it's impossible to tell now.

    Sorry for your loss....
