what another word for safehouse used by slaves?

this is for my son school project thanks

    I'm thinking you are referring to runaway slaves trying to reach the North, generally via the "underground railroad." Places where people could stop safely, were called "stations." Sometimes they were taken from "station" to "station" by "conductors" who were the people, white or black, who were trying to help them.
