I was just thinking of reincarnation! I do believe that we go to heaven or hell after death, but I don't know about reincarnation. It would be interesting, but what if I come back as an abused child? No thanks. I would rather spend my eternity in heaven.

Think about what we mean by a 'soul': What exactly do you think a soul is? What properties does it have? What part of 'you' resides in the soul?

If it's postulated that consciousness, or awareness, or sense of self resides in the soul, it's difficult to see how this can be reconciled with the complete oblivion which accompanies general anaesthesia. How could a straightforward chemical, injected into the bloodstream, anaesthetise a soul so that it effectively ceases to exist during this time? If consciousness, in the form of a soul, were some kind of supernatural faculty, it would seem implausible that it could be completely disabled by a chemical.

How about some of the other things which we regard as essential parts of what makes a person what they are? How about love, compassion, reason, empathy, memory, conscious thought, character, 'spirituality' and so on? Well, there is really no plausible doubt that all these things are properties of the physical brain - We can alter all of these properties very simply with alcohol or other drugs, and observe how they change in people who have suffered significant brain damage. Previously placid people become uncontrollably violent, intelligent people become imbeciles, and so on. Stimulate the brain artificially, and the subject reports corresponding mental activity, e.g. 'religious experiences'. We can see from brain research that all these things - thought, emotion, sensation, character traits and so on - are correlated with activity in the brain, and some things can be identified with specific areas of the brain.

So, if all these faculties and characteristics of what we regard as the 'person' reside in the physical brain, as seems to be undeniably the case, and they all cease when the person dies, then what is left to be attributed to a 'soul'? As far as I can ascertain: Nothing. If there is no part of us that can continue after death, then there is no 'afterlife'... and if there is no afterlife, then most of religion is null and void.

    i beleive in it

& the proof is very easy to be understood

    just imagine

if u went to school or a college

    u went to study engineering

after 1 year of studying subjects & writing lectures & all of these things

the college told u that thanks to u for ur effort

u have finished ur period of studying

then u left this college without exams

    without a degree

    is it possible ???

    is it reasonable ???

    it is the same

    ppl also do the same

    some are working hard

    some arent working

    some are killing others

    some are stealing

    some are donating for others

    etc.........

    everyone must have a degree

then we must have an exam

    this is the perfect justice

who made good things his way is to the paradise

who made bad things his way is to the hell

    thats all

i think we are all beleive in this but in this short life only

i wish u got my point

I hope that doesn't happen. There is really know way that the next life can be better than the one I got going now.

No, I do not believe in any form of afterlife. There is no evidence that satisfies scientists and logicians. I want to know, not blindly believe things.

  • 1 decade ago

    No...

It is a rather pointless thing to believe in... (if you really understand the implications of a causal universe).

I mean some people are just in denial about their mortality... so they made up a little fantasy.

sure, living in paradise(heaven) after a while and getting everything you want is fun for a while but eventually you'll want challenges again, that's my personal belief.

  • 1 decade ago

Nah. You're a brain that keeps thinking it's a person.

I will live in the memories of my many friends and few enemies.
