    COLD TURKEY!

    IT WORKED FOR ME.

    I STOPPED WHEN I WAS 24 YEARS OLD!

    ITS BEEN 5 YEARS NOW!

    ITS THE BEST THING I HAVE DONE FOR MYSELF!

    you have to cutt off the things arouond you that help you to smoke.

    like don't go into gas stations any more...pay at the pump.

    dont go to bars...where drinking is...smoking is....

    stop hanging round people that smoke.......

    these are all the things i did and loving it!

    I recently quit a 16yr 1/2 to 1 pack a day habit. I stopped cold turkey and had to almost call off the wedding. After that I decided to try the Niccorette patch. Although a little costly it worked very well for me. It took a small behavior change for a couple of weeks (cut back on drinking) to insure a successful attempt to stop. I used the patch successfully for 6 weeks with no problem; although when it's time to come off the patch there are a few days of heighten irritation, but you've broken the habit of smoking.     Lots of things have only a placebo effect, notably hypnotherapy and acupuncture. Group therapy has been shown to be useful and most areas have smoking cessation groups if you look for them.

    Pharmacological help is available in 2 forms, NRT-nicotine replacement therapy, and Zyban.

    I often find it useful to suggest an immediate form of NRT, in addition to the patch. If you don't like gum (thinking also here of the NRT gum), you could try the insuflator, which is a little like sucking on an artificial cigarette. It is also available for your pharmacist, or on prescription in Scotland. (Not sure about England), If you use it as well as the patch you may need to cut the patch dose down.

    Zyban is more effective than NRT but has more side effects. On occasion it has been used with NRT. It has dropped in popularity ever since the Daily Record did a number of unfair articles saying it made you die!

    How soon do you want to stop? I found that if I gave myself a designated area ( the Kitchen for instance) where I could smoke and NOWHERE else, I could cut way back. Also stay away from friends who smoke while you are trying to stop.

    Then in a week or three, I could no longer smoke in the kitchen, It worked for me. Been over for years now...Good luck.

    Step #1 you have to want to quit, Without the will to quit nothing will work

    If you doing only about 1/2 a pack a day then most anything works

    Over 1 pack a day, you have to use another method to get down that low

    I quit a 5 pack a day habit 99% of it was will power, some anti anxiety help get pass the final withdrawal

    Just set a date and go for it. Get rid of all smoking paraphanelia. Get some nicotine chewing gum and when the cravings get too bad have a piece.

    Tell yourself that there is no way you are going through all this again and never put a cigarette in your mouth again. Don't drink alcohol for a while as this weakens resolve.

    Remember that it is the cigarette you smoke that makes you want another one. So don't have it.

    I think it is an individual thing. What worked for me was :

    Talking to Health visitor who gave me advice and prescribed nicoteen patches. I met with her every 2 weeks for 3 months

    Best advice from nurse was not to do just do it but set a time and date about a week in advance prepare for that and from that point on refer to myself as a non-smoker (note not someone trying to stop but a non smoker).

    She suggested attending group but I suspected that in a group setting I might be tempted to play devil's advocate and opted not to do that.

    I also set myself a spreadsheet up which kept telling me how many cigarettes I had not smoked (based on previous amount) what this had saved and thus what I could afford.

  • Try the newest drug on the market Champonix. Either that or read Alan Green's book on stopping smoking. I really appreciated the latter because he told me to continue smoking whilst reading, treat me like an adult and not a misbehaving juvenile, went into the psychology of everything that is involved with smoking a cigarette. Great!

    Here is what I did to quit my nearly 2 pack a day for 30 years habit:

    Watch a lot of TV for now, allow myself the laziness to blob for a few days to deal with my anxiety.

    I keep Werthers hard candies and suck on one when I crave.

    Accept and embrace that I may gain a bit of weight at first, it was one of my reasons for not quitting...stupid.

    Take a walk around the block 2 times which takes 10 minutes...the same amount of time it took me to smoke 1 cigarette. Added benefit to that, less of a chance of too much weight gain.

    i never bothered with all those nicotine patches and gum when i gave up - i used normal gum, and did stuff to keep myself occupied. try to take up a hobby that keeps your hands busy - i make my own jewelry and make stained glass ornaments, etc, but i'm sure there must be other stuff out there. i also found it handy to have a pen / pencil in my hand, as kind of a replacement cigarette - it's healthier to chew the end (not the nib though !) of a pen than it is to smoke !!! also, collect all the money u save each day in a 'my treat' jar, and when u get to the end of each week without smoking, go treat yourself to something nice. it's a good incentive to keep going...
