They keep your feet from slipping during the swing, thus causing a miss hit. Slipping can also cause injuries.(i.e. pulled muscles, etc.)

Update: If you play in sandals or bare footed you probably suck at golf. So nothing is going to help you. Yes, golf shoes are not a necessity if you are not interested in playing as well as you can. If you are just interested in hacking the ball around, then wear what you want.

Your footware takes a pounding at golf, mostly when walking the course and also playing your shots. Whatever you wear, you will need something that provides a good grip, particularly when you are walking on wet grass, going up and down slippery hills. Waterproof golf shoes with cleats are the best all-round, all-weather solution and if you haven't tried them I recommend you do so asap! Since a pair of purpose designed golf shoes costs no more than a pair of waterproof walking shoes or a pair of trainers that you will find unsuitable for all the weather conditions you will play in, I recommend golf shoes as the best option - score me a 9 out of 10.

P.S. - some golf clubs won't allow you on their course unless you wear golf shoes with plastic cleats.

Of course Golf Shoes improve your game! I give it a 10!! Alot of research goes into designing a golf shoe! The shoe is a very important piece of equipment to playing golf. Shoes are designed to help you have good traction during your golf swing so you can stay balanced. Golf shoes are also made for comfort and to keep your feet nice and dry!

Is this starting to make any sense yet!

Well to sum it up... Golf shoes aren't one of these things that we can ignor when buying equipment for golf!

I played golf for years wearing low cut basketball shoes, and I was able to play somewhat decently (16 hdcp). I never thought that golf shoes mattered much. Late last year, I purchased a fairly cheap pair of Footjoys off of the internet, and the difference is amazing. I won't say that it's NECESSARY to play golf, but just having your feet anchored to the ground helps so much during the transition from your backswing.

I guess it's hard to describe...I never play without my golf shoes anymore, though.

I honestly have no idea how much they improve your game. But, after I slipped and twisted my knee on a wet greeen last year, I plan on buying a pair this year.

And I thought the guy that got all blown up because another guy is playing barefoot really needs to take a deep breathe and not get so worked up over someone else's idea of good golf.

They provide traction when you play so your feet don't slip when you swing. The extra traction helps you control your lower body that will in turn help you control your swing. You can play without them, but as far as being necessary from 1 to 10, I'd give them an 8. You'll definately notice a difference in your swing when you play with them.

i dont usually use them but i have freakishly large feet so i cant find any that fit but the give you better grip when you swing. on a scale of 1-10 i would say a 6 because if u have a good pair of like nike running shoes u shouldnt need them if u get enough traction. its a matter of opinion and how clumsy u are. lol

The only item improved is the shoemaker's wallet.

I used to know a person who swore he played the best when bare-footed.

Improvement comes from practice, not shoes.

The scale you spoke of? Zero would be a good number.

they make you more stable and less likely to slip. they are good but i only use them sometimes when the grass may be slightly damp.if you are serious about golf then i would recommend getting them.
