What is liberalism?

Not in the sense opposite to conservatism, but in the context as to how would someone like Adam Smith, Tocqueville, John Stuart Mills, or even Fukayama might explain it?

What it truly is and what people refer to as liberalism today are not one and the same.

Certainly most reasonable people will find certain aspects of liberalism to be beneficial and enlightening yet liberalism in all senses promotes an interventionist state and once people see through the veil of propaganda they quickly turn away from liberalism.

You see in current practice today liberalism is socialism hiding under some fancy word play, after all you cannot make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

If you want the state to intervene in the citizens lives that is not liberalism in the true sense it is socialism. If you want the state to physically intervene in the citizens lives that is communism.

Many in congress of the "liberal" persuasion are simply socialists/marxists using the term liberal to gain a little respectability with the uneducated masses. If they are not true marxists they are at least corporate fascists and will use tryanny to suppress the populace should other means fail. Google corporate democratic fascism
