what is the command in "run?"?
to enter to use ms-dos, and format your drive? Windows 2000 Office. do you then just enter "format c:\ ?"
now it says "cannot unlock volume, still in use" when i try to "force volume" as commanded.

Okay, you're pretty confused. The Run command is for running programs, especially if there's no icon for them. Examples include gpedit, mmc and others. It has nothing to do with Office or formatting your hard drive. Office has nothing to do with formatting your hard drive. You can select Run and then type cmd.exe to get to the prompt, but that won't allow you to format your C: drive because it's in use by the operating system.
If you want to format your root drive, you have to boot off of something else. If you have your OS installation CD you can boot off of it. If it's XP, you can then go into the Repair Console and format the drive from within the repair console. If you have an old DOS boot floppy you can use it to boot and format.

It's actually pretty complicated to reformat. I did mine not too long ago (3 weeks or so) and my brother actually walked me through the whole process. I had to find the self-extract code from the dell website (since i have a dell) and copy it to a disk. But maybe because my computer was having serious issues.
