Catholics believe that at the time of our death it is determined whether we go to Heaven or Hell, and that is determined by the state of our soul at the time of our death- and the destination cannot be changed.
We also believe that there is a state we call purgatory, for those who are in need of purification before entering Heaven. Anyone who ends up inpurgatory will eventually get to Heaven.
The idea of Purgatory is supported by scriptures which tell us to pray for the dead. If a soul is in hell, no amount of prayer will do any good. If it is in Heaven, it needs no prayer...so there MUST be a reason to pray for the dead- that reason is to pray on their behalf to help those souls closer to heaven!

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Purgatory is “a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are, not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.” To summarize, in Catholic theology, Purgatory is a place that a Christian’s soul goes to after death to be cleansed of the sins that had not been fully satisfied during life.

As a Catholic, life after death is what we don't know. We have no idea of it. No one on earth does. The creator has not manufactured that in us. He did give us a capicity to forgive and love and love God most. But if you can remember that happiest time you have had, I presume it will be like that forever. hw

That death dies with you and you do not really die but, you are changed in an instant. To die is to be reborn in eternal life. Your sins are left on the cross. Adios sinful nature and you can no longer sin and you are with all the angels and Saints and the Blessed Mother and JESUS the Lord in Heaven.

Catholics believe that you will go to heaven if you die in a state of sanctifying grace, purgatory if you still have sin that you need to be cleansed of, or hell if you die with the stain of mortal sin.

After the big pie-fight, there's a lot of discussion about who will make the first pizza run. God (of course) is exempt and also gets the choicest spot on the couch. Usually it's the new guy.
The pizza always tastes great.

If you've been good you go to Heaven. If you've died with venial sins comitted you will go to purgatory for purification then go to Heaven. If you have been an evil person who hasn't repented you will go to Hell.
