Dog drinking pool waer....health issues??

My 2 year old female Belgium Malinious drinks from our pool daily. It is properly maintained with shock treatments, pH testing, chlorine, vacuuming, etc. Are there any possible health hazards Ember could incure (immediately or long term) from intaking to the water??

I wouldn't recommend it. Chemicals are never good to ingest. Is that her only access to water? If it is, try putting out a separate bowl of fresh water that is easily accessible for her instead of pool water.

    - Try not to let your dog drink pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals that could cause GI upset.

Chlorine --when used properly in pool water is NOT toxic - drinking water is treated with chlorine! However some necessary pool additives - algae treatment/preventative, shock treatments, etc are not recommended for humans to be exposed to these chemicals until the levels drop (usually 6 -12 hours on average)- this applies to humans or animals. Generally if its safe for kids its safe for pets - with small percentage of exceptions (chocolate, aspirin, etc. -some human friendly substances that can cause problems in certain animals ranging from malaise, vomiting, to death, depending on the animal and the substance). While home test strips and kits are OK for a quick assessment- the only correct and safe way to monitor your pools chemistry and assure its safety for everyone, is with occasional professional testing with a fresh pool sample taken from about 12 inches below the surface (and not one taken 2 hours ago and left sitting in your hot car or the sun) done at your local pool supply store - they usually do this as a courtesy free for their customers. Pool chemistry safeness-while not hard for a homeowner, is a lot more complicated than most are led to believe and are aware of. Just work with your professional store and all will be fine :)

Dogs and cats will drink from swimming pools, and the chlorine and other chemicals used to keep pools free of algae and other contaminants can cause pet health problems, from dry mouth to gastric distress.

Keep a fresh clean bowl of water available for her so that she won't be drinking the pool water.

Chlorine is toxic. Not only is it hard on her stomach, but several studies have shown it leads to kidney problems and even cancer in humans (and many of this is just by swimming and swallowing relatively small amounts). I'd ask your vet but, fact is, if it does this much damage to humans, I doubt it does much less to you dog, especially if she's drinking so much of it in comparison.

If your dog (Ember...either now or at some point in time) likes swimming fresh water lakes or even the beach (if there's one nearby) could work. In the meantime, just like you likely try to keep her from eating out of the trash, it's probably in both of your best interests to keep her from drinking out of the pool...and of course always keep her doggy bowl of water full so she doesn't feel the urge.

My dog drinks pool water all the time...just make sure that if you put treatments in the pool to make sure you keep your dog away from the pool because the treatments could do some damage...

Not that I know of my goldens in the summer must dring a gallon a day and they have been fine.

I would keep the dog away right after the pool is given more treatments but after and hour or so it should be fine.

I have a salt water system and they do just fine! I have 4 dogs and they drink pool water all the time.

It shouldnt harm the dog, because the amount of chlorine in the pool is not high enough to hurt anything.

I'm surprised she drinks from it with the chemical smells. My dogs won't go real close to the pool because of this. I would be concerned about the chemicals too. Ask you vet.

From what I understand, the chlorine can eventually take its toll on your dog's kidneys. I don't think that it's ver good for him.

Ask your vet about long term effects of chlorine and your dog.
