Pizza Hut charges $2 for delivery. Does that mean I don't have to tip the driver? And a question about Sonic?

Does that $2 go to the driver, or to line Pizza Hut's wallet? I feel like I'm paying double to deliver my pizza.

I also wonder about Sonic. They bring the food to your car. Do I tip them? I currently don't. Woopdy doo, you walked 20 feet to bring me my food when you didn't take my order or make it or bag it, and I'm supposed to pay you for your trouble? Don't you already get a paycheck for doing just that? I worked at a fast food place where we had to take the orders, partially make the order, put it on the tray, and take the food to the tables and I wasn't supposed to accept tips.

Update:

Then there's Luby's. I think that's just a Texas chain. It is a cafeteria restaurant where you stand in line and the employees put on your plate what you ask for, then you carry your tray to your table and eat. Once in a blue moon somebody might ask if I want more tea, but most times I go there that's not the case. I have no interaction with "waiters." They told me one day I was supposed to tip my "servers." I thought to myself, "what servers?" Nobody ever refills my drink, and I walk my own tray to my table. The only interaction with employees is when I tell them what I want on my plate. That's about 8 people. Am I supposed to tip all 8 of them for basically scooping mashed potatoes on my plate? Don't they get a check for that already?

Update 2:

I was also buying a slice of pizza from someplace and they had a tip jar out. I just paid for the pizza, and I guess they wanted me to pay them for giving it to me. I think this "tipping" thing is a bit out of control.

I tip the driver at pizza hut, if hey come quickly. They have to pay for the gas at that time, but then write it off at tax time so I don't tip a lot, just enough so they can keep the tank full. As for Sonic... I usually only tip if they wear the skates. I just think it is cool that they are trying to keep it retro. You are right about Luby's if I go there (or to a Buffet) i usually don't leave a tip unless they got me high chairs and my drinks before I had to ask. Also a a buffet if they are quick to remove the dirty plates then they get a dollar or 2. Usually around 10%, but no more than that. I hate tip jars at places where they are just standing there I never give those kids tips. What next, tipping the sour cream gun guy at taco bell? It seems to be getting a little out of hand.

    Pizza Hut Delivery Charge

You ask "I know you think 10% or 15% is still a good tip right????"

I say "Why not"? The tip is a percentage, so as a percentage of the cost of a commodity that IS adjusted for inflation, that tip is automatically adjusted for that same inflation.

At 10% that steak that cost $5 years ago garnered a 50c tip, and everything was considered fine. Now it costs $20 and the tip would go up proportionally to $2. Why shouldn't a 400% tip increase be enough? And if you think tips should be 20%, why shouldn't the restaurant charge an equivalent increase of 800% on that steak and charge $40?

Why should the tip be a percentage of what you paid in the first place? If you go to a fine resturaunt, you are already paying for the price of the food + cooking + serving + profit margin. The tip is supposed to go the kid not getting paid much at a small mom and pop shop or any chain that doesn't pay their employees minimum wage (Really tipping should be done away with... tipping is a way for small resturaunts to artificially lower the cost of food by having you pay part of their employees salary...). That being said, we should be tipping according to their service, not for the price of the food. On a $200 meal for two people, I shouldn't have to pay someone $20 to bring me my food. They didn't do anymore work than the pimply faced kid at the diner where two meals is $15 and the 10% tip is $1.50! That makes no sense cause the tip doesn't go to the resturaunt, it goes to the waiter, but they don't pay for the food out of pocket, and well prepared food isn't heavier or harder to carry than burgers and fries... so the tip should have NOTHING to do with the price of the food.

Im a driver at a pizza hut. Our delivery charge is $2.** and it goes to pizza hut. Not us drivers. We are reimbursed for our miles too but, only like .20 cents a mile. Not too bad. You are basically tipping to ensure the fastest delivery for next time. I tell ya i cant count how many times drivers sped out the parking lot on a delivery they know is a $10 tip. As drivers though we put our cars through hell with all the stopping and going and drive and reverse and on and off. That is what costs us money out of pocket mostly. It is very dangerous too. Ive seen so many bad things driving so much. Like a cyclist getting hit by the car in front of me, a vehicle getting smashed straight on by an suv at 55mph, cops pulling you over cause your acting suspicious (yeah, thats happened), getting robbed, other people getting robbed, people infront of you going off the road, deer running out in front of you. Its pure chaos out there.

    For pizza:

"Delivery charges" go to the store.

Before there were "delivery charges" drivers were still paid an amount per run to cover the costs of fuel, this charge was already built in to the price of your pizza.

When pizzerias started charging you $1 - $2 to deliver the pizza in addition to what you were already paying (just because it wasn't itemized doesn't mean you weren't paying to have the pizza delivered [not "free"]) drivers mileage rates changed very little or not at all. The stores keep the new charge.

The "delivery charge" should be called something else, because the term is severely hurting drivers income, and overcharging customers. But the store owners are laughing all the way to the bank.

Something else to consider: If gas is $2.50, the driver is lucky enough to get 20mpg in city or residential driving, and the delivery is only 3 miles away from the store, then the driver has spent 75 cents in gas alone to deliver the pizza. And you can bet that the same stores that are ripping its customers off, ripping its drivers off, ripping uncle sam off, and too cheap to pay minimum wage are skimping on mileage reimbursement rates too...

If it were cheaper for a store to maintain their own fleet, instead of paying a low mileage rate to drivers they would do it of course, that would mean more money for the greedy stores. But you don't see many delivery guys riding around in company vehicles, so who is picking up difference between the actual cost of maintaining a delivery fleet and the price the store owners are willing to pay? The drivers. Not only are they overcharging you, they are underpaying the drivers.

Laughing all the way to the bank.

Thank you very much for your interest, and your tip.

    - if you still don't want to tip, pick it up yourself, because you are literally costing the driver time and money so you can be lazy, and thats just selfish, mean, and cheap.... just like the store owners.

I work as a pizza hut delivery driver. Yes you should definitely tip. They charge 2.50 for delivery and I get .88 cents of it for gas. Not to mention that delivery drivers get payed LESS then min wage and the company expects tips to make up the rest. Well I worked super bowl sunday yesterday and we were busier then ever but I wasnt getting tipped at all. I made LESS THAN MIN WAGE yesterday (and I have a 3 month old to support). So please remember to tip, its the right thing to do.

dude, tip the pizza delivery guy. The delivery charge goes to Pizza Hut not the driver. If you don't want to pay it or tip, then go pick it up yourself instead of taking it out on the driver.

Why do servers get tipped by percentage and drivers just get a couple bucks no matter what the order amount? We have to use our dang car.

I always tip the delivery guy and put the loose change in the tip jar - most of the workers in fast food aren't making big bucks so why not pay it forward a bit.

Besides - do you want your food handler PO'd next time they deliver that pizza to the address that doesn't tip? I'd rather not have the delivery guy hocking up something on my next extra large pepperoni.
