Well, in order to fully understand why, you have to know three definitions in game design:

1- VOWC "Velocity of Wealth Creation"-- the speed at which money or resources are gained by players through normal game interaction

2- C/S Ratio "Chance to Strategy Ratio"-- how much of the game is randomly determined as to how much of the game is player determined

3- ROF "Reversal of Fortune"-- a single event which can drastically change the position of one or more players in the game

In Monopoly, the VOWC starts heavily and stagnates. Each player starts with $1500 and they only gain $200 if they pass GO, which can be difficult if you are rolling doubles all the time or draw a "Go Directly to Jail" card. This means that with three players in the game and an average move of only 9 spaces per turn, (yes, nine -- remember that doubles roll again) the amount of money in the game will be guaranteed to double only after 105 turns (if no one hits community chest, chance and the optional $500 for free parking)

Then, the C/S Ratio changes from heavily strategic in the beginning where you must decide what to spend your money on, to heavily random when every property is bought. You begin to rely heavily on your die roll not to cost you thousands of dollars on that green monopoly just past the GO TO JAIL space (for example). The only way to really advance your position is to trade with other players, but since trading is generally not in SOMEONE's best interest in this game, no one usually wants to trade.

The only ROF scenario that happens in Monopoly is when one of the players is eventually eliminated. When their property becomes available, it becomes possible for a player to advance an otherwise unfavorable position.

Generally, though, once all of the properties are bought, the game will become a random series of die rolls where players will trade about 20%-40% of their wealth each turn.

It takes an average of 65 turns for a player to eventually lose $6000 in a three player game once all of the properties have been purchased. This is mainly due to the trading of wealth -- i.e.- I land on your property, pay you $675. You land on my property, pay me $800. The third player lands on your property, paying you $150.

The third player has lost $150 (not very much), I have gained $125, and you have gained $25.

It can take a long time with incremental gains and losses like this to end a game.

It's a game of chance and strategy. Strategy games usually last longer. However if you are good with stratey games, monopoly can become a very short game.

The shortest time I took is 30mins to finish a game of monopoly with 2 NPC (Tycoon types) in the PC Game Monopoly Here & Now.

So it just depends on your luck and strategy used.

Well it is because of many things in the game of chance.

You have properties, money and chance to land in any space on the board.

So basically it means that the game can be long.

(P.S. there are also records of people playing monopoly in various locations like: Treehouse (11 days)

Well...i suppose it takes a long time because there are so many places where you could step on. Also, this game involves a lot of chance, the chance of rolling a certain amount of movement, chance of the cards. The whole game is really based on probabilities.

It takes long because you haveto go all around the board so many times and get so much money and do this and that.

Then, when you have more players, it takes longer becuase everyonhe has to do that (what i wrote on top)
