What is an appropriate age to put a child in a bunk bed?

A friend of mine has 2 little girls, ages 3 and 2. His wife, on a whim, decided to purchase a bunk bed for them. Myself, and several other friends, think the girls are too young to sleep on the top bunk, but the wife doesn't want to put both of them together on the bottom. She wants them to sleep in their own beds. The bunk bed is not one that can be seperated as 2 seperate beds, so keeping the beds seperated until they are older is not an option. I was just curious as to what other people thought about this. Are the girls too young to have a bunk bed?

We just purchased a bunk bed for our 9 yr old son - right on the bed it says for 6 yrs and up. Yesterday morning our 3 1/2 yr girl fell out of bed (first time). I hope they get HUGE rails for the top bunk. Is the 3 yr old potty trained? If so, they probably will be getting call to go potty or cries from falling out. My personal opinion, but 3 is too young for a bunk. I hope no one gets hurt.

My daughter was almost 5 when I got her and her brother bunk beds. He was 2. I also made sure the top bunk that she sleeps in had a rail so she couldn't fall out. I think kids are old enough once they can navigate the ladder safely and yes I personally think those girls are too young.

I think it depends on whether or not the kids can climb up and down from the top bunk alone with ease or not. They are not likely to fall off the top, since the top usually has railing of some sort, but the climbing thing would worry me.

The consumer product safety commission clearly states:

'Do not permit children under 6 years of age to use the top bunk.'

most top bunks have a little fence or border that surronds the bed so the kid doesn't fall out if this bed has it then the kid should be fine if it doesn't then yes they are too young

I think so because I have known too many people who made the same mistake and ended up with a kid with a concusion. Kids that age like to climb and they aren't always too graceful at it and they fall. I think bunkbeds are dangerous for kids under 5 and even then it depends on the kids and the bunkbed.

I'd say age 5, but I see others have replied that the manufacturer recommends age 6.

I shared a bunkbed with my sisters and we all got concussions at one time or another. LOL

YES!!!! Right on our bed it states...a child should be at least six before they sleep on the top!! I would worry myself sick if I had kids that young sleeping on the top.
