Is a 5-yr old ready to watch and enjoy a (non-kiddie but not necessarily adults only) musical?

Update:

she loves music and dancing, but has yet gone to a professional live performance that is not (really) for kids. in case, she will be going with us parents, AND her 11-yr-old brother who's not really-really interested but curiously interested enough to try it (but i don't think i should worry about him though).

I agree with the answers who say it depends. If the musical is a quick paced presentation with a lot of colors and sounds - perhaps.

Our family recently went to see the Lion King and the 5ish year old in front of us was somewhat distracting with the "mommy, why did he..." or "mommy, what is..." questions. The famous neverending "whys" that are inevitable at that age.

I would say if the child can sit quietly in a movie theater to watch a movie chances are he is ready. If not, it may be wiser to wait until he is older when he can enjoy the performance rather than be bored or too inquisitive or even scared (depending on theme).

why not start with a dvd at home of something similar and see how she goes. My friends kids have sat and watched movies like the Music Man and Singin' in the Rain since they were about 4. You will see her interest and how long it holds.

It depends on the kid. My little sister loved Carousel and Camelot from the time she could sit upright. Other kids prefer animation at that age (Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty). I have a niece who loved Shakespeare plays from about 5 years old (before that, she was totally into Greek and Roman mythology, and not the kid stuff). You won't know until you try it.

It would depend on the musical. Some of them are very long, and I'm not sure a 5 year old would be able to sit still that long or follow the story enough to be entertained. If it is filled with a lot of action and geared toward families, maybe.

Good luck trying to keep the kid occupied. I saw Le Miserables when I was in SIXTH grade, and I was, let's just say, bored to tears; i would have rather been in school, which coming from a sixth grader is major.

If you mean on TV, try it.

If you mean a live performance, you can try it, but be prepared to give him alternate entertainment if it doesn't work.

Depends on how much dialogue there is. If there is a lot of music and little dialogue he'll enjoy it

Hard to say-he/she will let u know if they are interested or not. I would be ready with an alternative.
