Unknown Smell?

Here is the problem, i watch 2 little kids and their parents came to me and said there is a strong odor coming from my house. They aren't sure what it is and I must be so used to it i don't smell anything. The mom said she started noticing it when we got a dog, the dad said it smells like mildew/musty. So the question is how do i get rid of a smell that i don't know the cause of. I deep cleaned the whole main floor of my house and part of the basement. Is there anything i can use/do to get rid of odor?

Open the windows every day (upstairs at least) for one ot two hours. Also, wash and dry the dog and if it gets wet - wet dog smell lasts for days.

If it's a mildew musty smell it may be coming from your carpet. If the dog has relieved himself anywhere this would bring out both odors. Maybe try steam cleaning all the carpet in your home making sure to get along the edges near the baseboards well. Sometimes it's in the padding and just impossible to remove. If there has ever been a leak from the roof or inside a wall, this will leave the mildew or musty smell. You're right, when you live in it, you don't notice it like others do. You may have noticed that you have sinus infections or sinus problems more than usual if you think about it. It's probably caused from this mildew odor in your house. Check everything from the walls surrounding pipes, washing machine hoses, hot water heater, under cabinets with sinks, around toilets and tubs even in the attic for water leaks that haven't shown up inside yet, anywhere there could be a leak or where water comes into or out of the house. You may find you have a small leak, or there was one before that's been fixed, but the walls or floor wasn't cleaned properly before it was repaired allowing this mildew and mold to grow that's causing this odor. Most people don't realize the odor or link them to illnesses they've had, but these odors from bacteria of mold and mildew in the home have been found to be the cause of a lot of people having sinus problems. Then again sometimes older homes just have this smell. Good luck!

Another thought, maybe these people just don't like the idea of the dog, with you keeping their kids, maybe they are finding excuses for the "dog to go" or their "kids to go" somewhere "dogless."

It dawned on me this afternoon that you mentioned having a basement, this is usually where musty mildew odors come from, especially if it's an unfinished basement or even a crawl space under a house can make the inside smell. Check there to see if there are any tell tell signs of water leaks on the walls, or from pipes or where water may be seeping in around windows. I'll bet you find the answer there! Hope you do anyway. Good luck!

I would ask some others to come over with out telling them why, once they are there ask them to tell you if they smell anything. Could be the parents are afraid the dog will bite the kids. With all the news about pit bull biting people on the tv & everywhere ya go its no wonder.

First determine if there IS a smell. Then you can decide how to get rid of it. If your home smells you should at least smell it when you first come home after being gone most of the day sometime. Could you have a small gas leak outside? Do you have a propane tank? Lots of leaves that could be moldy outside? Determine if it is outside or in-they said coming from your house not in your house. Is your dog an outside dog that comes in as well? If so it will always smell like dog. Dogs go outside & come in smelling like a dog no matter how often you bathe them. People who do not smoke or own dogs probably smell things you do not, even if you do not smoke.

Just get another honest outside opinion & help to track it down. Then clean the source.

If there is really a smell, and it is not the dog itself they are opposed to. Try asking a close friend to come over and see if she/he can help sniff out the problem area. If you have and older home it could be the window area where water accumulates and could mold. Carpets, washing machines, under the sink, leaky pipes, animal water dish spills area few areas to look at. Plug ins are great as a cover-up, but will not resolve the initial problem you need to find the source. Also you could go outside for a period of time to clear your nasal senses and re-enter the home to see if you yourself can actually smell the offending odor. In addition the parents of these children may help you to locate the source.

hey have you tried airing out your house on a pretty day? for example, open all of your windows and doors, and let some fresh air go through. Maybe you have a septic tank?

and your neighbors can smell it? WOW sounds like maybe your dog has taken a crap in your house somewhere that you haven't found yet. That happened in my aunts house one time. Or maybe something is dead in your garge, that you cannot find........did you try some lysol. Maybe you could have some mildew problem in your walls...Call someone that can help you tell if that is so....

My brother and sister in law had a strange smell in their house and ended up finding a mouse had crawled in a hole from the outside of the house and made it into the wall and couldn't get out and was dead. So they went inside, drilled a hole through the drywall and found it! I know it's gross, but that was the cause of the smell~one possibility?!!!!
