If you were taking a course on popular culture, what would you hope to learn?

I'm designing an undergraduate course on US popular culture and media for this summer. I'm looking for some ideas

Why do so many people enjoy nonsense? Some things in pop culture and even in rap are just stupid and they lack substance but yet in sttill so many people want to be a part of that. I can be a guest speaker if you want just contact me.

I would want to know about the roots of popular culture since it truly is a recent event (in the great scheme of history).

Why are people so concerned with the lives of celebrities? The more a "celebrity" is in the tabloids, the bigger bucks she gets paid. People should stop watching entertainment shows, reading tabloids and judging celebrities, and start focusing on their own lives and how they can better improve their own conditions. Paris Hilton is already rich, are you?

Perhaps something on sexuality. Sex sells, but why? Why do untalented people with huge breasts enjoy more fame and money than more talented, unattractive people?
