Is it OK to give my 5 year old whole milk to drink since she is thin?

She stopped drinking ANY milk at age 3 and I was always struggling to get calcium in her (hates cheese and yogurt). Now, I found out she likes whole milk with Ovaltine. She is very active and thin. Just wondering if she should be having 2% or if whole milk was OK.

You should be asking the question the other way around. You should be saying "is it ok to have 2% not whole milk" because children are supposed to have whole milk until the age of 8 years old. If she'll drink it, I'd give it to her. Especially if she is thin, I'm surprised her pediatrician has never told you this

Because children are developing and growing, they need the fat from the whole milk. Which, by the way, only has 3% milkfat in it, so it isn't like 2% is SO much healthier.

If your daughter likes the ovaltine in her milk and it will ensure that she drinks it, give her 5 servings of dairy a day. that should help her have strong bones and healthy teeth and help build her brain with appropriate nutrition.

    MILK FACTS -

    Product: Whole Milk

    Serving Size: 1 cup/8 ounces

    Calories: 150

    Protein (grams): 8

    Carbohydrates (grams): 11.4

    Fat (grams): 8.2

    Calcium (milligrams): 291

make sure her overall diet is well rounded and includes plenty of vegetables and fruits.

    hope this helps.

I think whole milk is fine to give her and the ovaltine has the nutrients she needs. My kids all drink 1% now that the are all over 2, but I would give them whole if I thought the needed it.

I would try the 2% but if she hates it, it give her the whole milk. Just don't let her have more than a glass or two, it's full of fat. You could also try mixing 2% with whole to reduce the fat.

Have you tried giving her soy milk? It's got LOTS of calcium and she may prefer the taste.

Whole milk also known as Vitamin D milk has more nutrients in it then 2%. Whole milk is the best milk to give your child anyhow.

i would switch to 2% i really don't like the fat content in whole milk. its like drinking a cheese burger. not good. i would go to two percent. the taste of the ovaitine will hide the difference in the milk. however i read that nestle quick has more calcium see if she likes that. good luck.

yes, whole milk is best for young kids. Once they hit around 10, go down to 2% or 1%

Absolutely. I believe kids should drink whole milk always, even when they are in their teens.

Young children should ALWAYS be on whole/full fat milk - it is not reccomend that they consume low fat dairy until they are well and truly school age and even then, require it.
