Why am I getting "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"?

I can't get into basic sites like www.cnn.com or www.53.com but I can get into most others like yahoo, google, etc. I've tried running anti-virus and anti-spyware and I've even tried a system restore but nothing works. Help!

Update:

I'm using IE 7, Norton Antivirus and Spybot. I tried lucee's One Care Cleanup - nothing. I tried clearing cookies and temp files - nothing. I tried sci's suggestions - nothing. So frustrating!

I really don't know. I just tried cnn.com and jumped right into it, and the same for 53.com, a website for a bank. And running a system restore would not have helped, it fact, it might have made things worse. It's highly possible there is a registry error causing this. You cannot "uninstall and reinstall" Internet Explorer, so try the free Microsoft registry cleaner in Live OneCare Cleanup Scan.

There is another thing you can do, called the System File Checker. Thoroughly read Leo's instructions on this website if you decide to use this.

That IS odd. I just tried them both websites throught IE and got there. Trying to think of what I'd do to solve it. Makes me wonder what type of antivirus and spyware you are running. Do you have Norton antivirus? I've found the AVG, AVAST, McAfee didn't do the job (that was a bad week! :-)

Also, Spybot and Adware haven't done too much for me (sounds like a medicine chest for spycatching).

Most people like Windows Defender and Spy Sweeper (from Webroot.)

I'd also suggest you run whatever antispy/virus in safe mode. Seems to catch more.

If not work you may want to consider re-formatting. And try Firefox as a browser. It should get you to the websites.

    IE 6 or 7????

IE 6= open IE click on Tools then Internet Options

Delete all cookies, Delete all files, Delete all History

Click on content tab, clear SSL State(if you don't have this you have an ancient copy of IE and need to get it replaced)

Then click on Auto Complete button and make sure you have every thing checked but Forms in the first section then clear forms button and delete all but your pwd's

Click on the security tab and reset all 4 Zones to default

Click on privacy tab and ensure it is set to default settings

click on advanced tab and hit "Reset Defaults"

    Click on Apply

    Click on OK

    Close IE

Reopen IE and see if you can get to the problem sites

IE 7 is similar but may have some differences so be carefull

This resetting usually clears the problem or discovers an ancient version of the program that needs to be upgraded!

What version of IE are you using? I work in technical support and this is a frequent problem we have been seeing with IE 7. Some times the webpage comes up, most of the time it doesn't.

Try cleaning out your cookies and temp folder and let us know if you can access those websites.
