My Neck Has A Tightened Muscle?

I assume I slept on my neck wrong, I was tired and went out like a light last night. Point is, this morning a muscle suddenly tightened on the right side of my neck, reducing the mobility of my neck to looking straight forward. As of right now, I'm still in much pain, but I can turn my neck to the left and slightly until the right. I want to know, would heating it be better, or should I ice it? Should I try not to irritate the muscle, or would movement help to untighten it?

This is a highly effective acupressure technique that I used to teach in a self-help massage program. You can do it to yourself, but if you have a friend/relative that can do it for you, you'll be able to relax better and get more benefit.

Firmly grasp the meaty part of the back of your neck with the palm of your hand and the flat surfaces of your fingers (i.e., not the tips). Don't be afraid to squeeze hard. Hold that grip for about a minute. Repeat the grip on both of the muscles running down from the sides of your neck to the top of the shoulders (called the trapezius muscles).

Take some anti-inflammatories like Advil or Aleve, take with a snack and a glass of milk, or a meal. A long hot shower should help, moist heat works wonders. If you have any muscle relaxers take one, even xanax works. It should be better after a hot shower and some advil. I'm sure you'll get some relief with moist heat, too. Get better!!
