I live in Thailand. The country is still partly under martial law but its also pretty much business as usual. You would not know there was anything out of the ordinary if you did not read papers or watch TV.
The unrest is in the 3 southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. Unless you are going there you should have nothing to worry about any more than you would in your home country.
Bangkok is a thriving metropolis and you should have a great time! Just use some common sense and due diligence while travelling. If you do not feel good about a particular situation, DON'T GO THERE!
ENJOY!

i think the newspaper and tv news is making out like thailand is a rouge state. I just answered this question a short time ago for someone else but here goes.Thailand is a very safe country for tourist to visit. Most of the violents that you read about is in the southern most 3 or 4 provinces which are not tourist areas. Resorts like Phuket, Samui, Krabi are safer then most U.S. cities. Crime will happen, however, if you don't get involved in illegal matters you will have no problems here.

Should be safe. I was in Bangkok all last week. The only minor problem was an anti-junta demonstration in the park near the Grand Palace which tied up traffic on Friday. The only concerns would be down south, near Malaysia where there is a Moslem insurgency (over 2000 people killed in the last 6 months in spite of the junta's claim it would end the fighting). Other tourist areas - like beaches - should be OK, just be careful.

Bangkok is as safe as most international cities. Don't know what fights you are referring to but if it's about the bombs going off in the south of the country, Bangkok is far from those terrorist attacks.

I'm Thai and I feel indifferent to live and travel anywhere anytime in the country except 3 southern most provinces, Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala. Life and business are as usual before or after the coup.
I still travel around the country and always get back home late at 1 - 3 am. after drinking or partying with friends. Be careful, don't drive after drink, you'll be fined if you fail to pass the breath test, better take metered taxi.

Bangkok is perfectly safe. Fightings are all down south about 600-700 km away. So you and your gal pals should be able to enjoy yourselves.
