Why are there so few bridges crossing the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, LA?

This is another story research question. In looking at several maps of Baton Rouge (where I have never lived but only visited), I notice that there are only like two bridges crossing the Mississippi, and wonder why this is. Is it because of the river changing course? Because the ground is marshy?? Because the citizens of Baton Rouge love to sit in traffic...?

Because long bridges are expensive and two are satisfactory for the volume of traffic.
