The lifespan of a Redbud tree?

It was my understanding that Redbud trees had a short lifespan of only about 20 years or so. Is this true or not? I don't want to plant a tree in my yard if it's just going to die in 20 years. That's not very long for a tree. Thanks for the information!!! :)

Eastern Redbud is a short lived understory tree. In nature they will live longer than in our urban landscapes due to environmental stresses, diseases, insects, etc. A redbud should last 20 years in an urban landscape. There is a lot of variability to their expected life span. I do know of an urban redbud in its early 30's.

  • My Redbud lasted about 24 years and grew quite large before it began to die. I love these trees but they are short-lived apparently.
