Does the VP of legal affairs have to be an attorney?
This person would be supervising attorneys but would not be an attorney. Is there any requirement that he actually be an attorney? The CEO obviously supervises attorneys in the legal department and he is not an attorney, but is giving this person this title problematic?

My guess would be that this VP doesn't *have* to be an attorney so long as the attorneys she is supervising are all employees of the company. Lawyers in private practice have ethical constraints against being directed or supervised by non-attorneys (i.e. I can't allow my law firm to become owned or controlled by a non-attorney), but these rules are not in effect if the lawyers are employed full-time by a company. Having said that, I think that it would extraordinarily difficult for a non-attorney to truly lead a legal department, as there are many aspects of legal work that are difficult to understand without the training, education, and experience that licensed attorneys have.
