Many children are very hyper and don't need much sleep. I know you hate to hear this. This is often true of very bright children. I know this...I've lived it.
No naps during the day!! Maybe rest period, but no naps. There are audible bedtime stories that he can control just by punching different buttons. Get a 'player'. Do not get him all hyped up right before bed, watch sweet drinks/sweets, have soft sheets, blankets for him to cuddle in...maybe a musical teddy, hold him before bedtime...children need to know they are safe and loved. When the lights are turned off, turn his ceiling into darkened 'starry sky' with special effects lighting.
He has a busy, inquisitive mind and needs to have something to turn to when dad's sleeping!
An occasional box of animal crackers...I know that's kinda bad, but it didn't kill my son. Oh well...good luck!

You didn't say how old you're son is, but I'm guessing he's an infant. This may sound silly, but you might try this: Switch the time of day when you give him his bath. If you normally give him a bath in the morning, switch to right before bed. If you give him a bath right before bed, switch to morning. This has worked for several kids, mine as well as friends.
