Would it be a good idea to fast during the month of Ramadan, even though I'm not a Muslim?

I'm not a Muslim, but on this campus their is a growing minority of Muslims on this campus, particularly from Saudi Arabia, and I have become good friends with them, as has my sister and some other people I know.

And, as a Christian, I also believe in the principles of prayer, fasting and self-sacrifice for the sake of others and so that God can work through us. All of those principles seem to be reflected in the (Islamic) practice of fasting during Ramadan. A few of my friends from a Christian fellowship (about 20 or so of us) are considering joining with the Muslims on campus and fasting for Ramadan in support of them in addition to the reasons above.

Would my friends, who are Muslims find this offensive and hypocritical or mocking because we're not Muslims, but Christians? Or would they find it supportive and good that we decided to join in with them and support them during and for the fasting in Ramadan?

salam (peace be upon you), i believe it would be very supportive for your fellow muslims on the campus if you participate in the fasting. They will be encouraged by your behaviour and will be more comfortable with their practices. Plus fasting is very beneficial for your spiritual journey. It prevents you from eating, drinking, intercourse (copulating) and various other sins of your special senses for the sake of God. You will have food infront of you, water, coke, pepsi, girls u name it, but you'll chose not to go for those things, given the opportunity, just for the sake of God. Fasting will show you a world without materialistic things, and will make you focus your attention on the things you barely notice around the year, your "self" and God. I believe you should go ahead with fasting.

It's always good idea to fast the month of Ramadan. U don't have to be a muslim to fast, it's for everyone. as long as you believe in Jesus, and God.

Fasting begins with a dawn and ends ar sunset, local time. During daylight hours, a fasting person must abstain from food, drink, and marital sexual intercourse. These activities are permissible from sunset to the following dawn.

Fasting teaches self-control, and patience. Like prayer, fasting is a way to turn to God in sincere worship.

It's always a pleasure to have non-muslims to fast at the month of Ramadan, as long as you try and believe.

people always get greedy , some don't even realize that there are less fortunate out there. Some don't even care to know or help out the poor and sick. Basically what fasting does it reminds us of the conditions of the needy and gives appreciation for the simple things we often take for granted, such as drinking a glass of water or eating food at will.

It would great Idea as long as you believe you can do it. even if you don't, you'll recieve more deed for trying.

Having fasted for Ramadan once before when at college (friends were liberal Muslims, mind you; it depends on the views of the Muslims you know), it all depends upon the approach you use. If you create a situation of mutual understanding and respect, then your friends will welcome questions, but if you do it just to prove that you can be just like they can, that would obviously be disrespectful. I assume you're doing it for the understanding and respect rationale.

Please, though, ask them questions and talk with them before doing it. Let them know you're doing it, so you don't catch them by surprise. Get their approval and the approval of the campus Muslim leader, at the very least. When you are fasting, be respectful, do it as a Muslim would (so your friends don't look at it like you're only doing it halfway), and be willing to defer to their experience and knowledge about the tradition.

Best advice I can give from having done it before.

Fasting is a personal thing between you and God and it's done in secret and God will reward you in secret. Don't be like the hypocrites praising God in public so that every one can see. We don't have to be Muslims nor Catholic to fast.

Please read the Bible Matthew chapter 6 "Take good care not to practice your righteousness in front of men in order to be observed by them; other wise you will have no reward with your father who is in the heavens. When you go making gifts of mercy, do not blow a trumpet ahead of you, just as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be glorified by men. Truly I say to you, they are having their reward in full.

Matthew 6:17 "But you, when fasting, grease your head and wash your face, that you may appear to be fasting, not to men, but to your father who is in secrecy, then your Father who is looking on in secrecy will repay you." Hope I have enlightened you. Good Bless.

    Waw...

    That is very interesting!!!

I love the idea. And no, they won't think of you as a hypocrate at all, vice versa, you'll be more then welcomed. It's a great thing to know that there are open-minded people out there like yourself and your friends.

I'm pretty sure you'll gain a lot of self confidence towards what it means to be a good human being.

    Hope you have fun :)

    Peace.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree with the idea of a Christian participating in Ramadan when it's purpose is a specifically Muslim holiday.

Fast,pray,self-sacrifice if you feel want to- they are good principles and I think that's it's a good idea to do those things.

But in my opinion,it's not right to be celebrating Ramadan itself.

If you believe that fasting is one of the ways to show your personal belief then I would think it would be fine. Don't pretend that you are a wannabe Muslim however. Tell them that you have chosen this time to do your Christian fasting as well.

I'm a muslim. Muslims are very liberal and welcoming when others join them when it comes to religion. Ofcourse it would be great if you fast with them. Fasting is not just for spiritual purposes, but its great for health according to Science. Its fasting from sunrise to sunset, everyday, for one month each year. Ask your muslim friends what they might think, but being a muslm, i would certainly be happy if my non-muslim friends want to join me for fasting. It's fun to fast and break the fast together. Good luck!

  • There is nothing wrong with it. the world needs more people like you. instead of condeming other religions you are choosing to try and understand it. bravo i say.

fasting has been proven to help with youre state of health, even though you are not muslim you can fast for health reasons.

As a Christian, you should not participate in the feasts/rites of heathens. That's where a Christianity has erred. Celebrating pagan feastdays as Holy days.
