Ex-smoker symptoms?

I finally, after 12 years, gave up smoking three months ago. I know it's good for me, but since quitting I have never felt worse! I keep getting colds and my skin is really bad. Short of starting again, does anyone have any suggestions how I can feel better again?

Congrats, hon, for kicking the habit after 12 years. That's no mean feat. I know how awful it must be to have this kind of pay off now you've been smoke-free for 3 months, but if you can hang in there the colds and skin problems will lessen and you will be fighting fit soon. It's just your body fighting off the toxins in your system, and you can help it along by drinking OJ for vit C, tea to detoxify yourself etc. And think of all the money you are now saving by not smoking. I figure that if you smoked 5 a day for 10 yrs you would have spent nearly £5000. So why don't you spend the money you would've spent on fags for the last 3 months on something to make you feel great, right now. You deserve it.

You've made such a big difference to your life and health by quitting, don't let anything get in your way of what you have achieved.

    Hope things improve soon.

  • 20 years a smoker here, gave up 3 yrs ago, still suffering more than average colds and problems ( The two tumors I had taken out in January for instance ).

You smoked for 12 years... 144 months !!!.... why expect to get better in just three months ? It takes a long time, but think of this.... Your chances of a cold or a spot on your face are increased.... But your chances of Cancer, high blood pressure or heart disease fall with every passing day.

Take Vitamins and exersize, dental hygene is paramount, get your teeth and gums checked over by a hygenist, a lot of throat, chest and therefore general health problems can start in the mouth, gaeway to the whole body.

It takes a while for the nicotine to get completely out of your system, so the symptom you are suffering are normal. Me and my partner stopped smoking last November and where I have not had any of these problems (lucky I guess), my partner has had this happen to her. But now the symptoms seem to be getting better for her, and she is not suffering from colds so much. Don't start smoking again stick with it and be a winner. Hope this is of help to you.

I quit smoking after 25 years about 2 months ago and all the symptoms you are mentioning are very normal. Visit the website below. I'm a member, but there are forums where many questions and concerns are answered. Good job!

I just went to the doctor and he asked if I had quit smoking and I told him yes 2 weeks ago.I also told him I have been coughing more now than before. He laughed and said yup.Your body is clearing all the crap out of it which will produce acne and colds etc.Hang in there it WILL get better I'm told.He told me to drink plenty of caffeine free fluids right now to help wash out the toxins. Don't start again please.I have major lung problems from smoking.I wish I had quit years ago.

Nicotine leaves your body within 72-hours after your last ciggie, unless you're using nicotine replacement treatment. It's not the nicotine that's causing your symptoms; it's your body excreting the toxins (tar, chemicals and carbon monoxide, etc.) from your lymph system. Hang in there: drink 1.5 litres of water a day to help flush out your lymph system, and take a daily brisk walk, which also increases lymph activity.

it takes a while to get all that junk out of your system, it will clear up in a few more months. you just put your body in a shock state, it will be fine in time.
