Does anyone around here know what the word ASSUME means?

I just marked an answer as thumbs up when it should have been down. Someone made a remark about a man liking boys. Now unless this other person knows the one asking the question, to say such a thing about a person is really very unadult. What has happened to people Christian and non christian that such insults must be said? We need to watch our tongues, saying ugly things can get something untrue started and could ruin someone's reputation. There are some things that should NOT be allowed to be said about a person unless it is a known fact and already public. Need I say more???

Update:

Yes, I know what the word stands for for those who so blatanley spelled it out - that's why I used it - Now doesn't that make some of you feel like of silly sense I was not really asking what the word meant - did you read my explanation for asking the question?

Update 2:

So far, NONE of you get what I was really asking - Stop with the definitions - I know what it means - I wanted to know if YOU know what it means.

Assume: It makes an a** out of u and me, both.

I agree that we should not have to be told to not make unsubstansiated comments about each other. However, those who have taken over the country (not necessarily a political party) have instilled a sense of entitlement and political correctness that dwarfs all other senses combined. In so doing, they have enacted certain laws, and now it's against the law to do practically anything that makes sense, so it's unlikely that people here or anywhere will begin to use their common sense again. (this is not contained to the US only, it's a world wide problem)

Good morning GrandmaB...I understand most completely but to answer your question on the definition of "assume" here it goes.

Assume: This is from the dictionary...accept without verification of proof. Seize or take control without authorization.

Now to me and I might be totally wrong here but It's like a prejudgement. You have assumed that he is the criminal or you assume that they are lying. In my opinion that person who has assumed on another's actions or acts are being prejudgemental. Hope I have answered this correctly. Have a blessed day!

How it that an insult? How on earth can it be an insult to tell a man he likes boys?

It's an insult to 'accuse' somebody of having a sexual preference?

How open-minded towards homosexuals are you, if you concider the word gay to be an insult? Is 'heterosexual' also an insult?
