Try Lisa Gardner. Some of her books are a bit.. Racy, but the overall storyline is good.
My two favorites by her are: The Killing Hour, and The Next Accident.
genre: mystery/adventure/suspense
Another good author is Agatha Christie. If you're looking for novels bigger than about 100 pages, try her And Then There Were None. Also known as Ten Little Indian boys.
Along with Agatha Christie, there's Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. I suggest the Adventure of the Dancing Men if you like codes.
genre: mystery
Yet another good author would be Diane Duane's Young Wizards series. There are eight of them, and she's working on the ninth one right now.
genre: fantasy (I think)
And then there's Michael Connelly (sp?). I haven't read all of his, like I have for the rest of the mentioned authors, but my two favories are "The Poet" and "The Narrows". The Narrows is a sequel to The Poet.
genre: I'm pretty sure this is adventure/suspense
One more author I have to mention would be Dean Koontz. He's getting very popular, and for a good reason: his books are good. Or the ones I've read. I would suggest the Odd Thomas Trilogy and Tick Tock, as those were my favorites.
genre: suspense/mystery
Another good series would be the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. I just started reading them not too long ago, and they're very good.
genre: fantasy
And for first-third grade-ish books, I would suggest the Boxcar Children books by Gertrude Chandler Warner. I loved those books when I was little. Though dead, she has 100+ books that are very good.
genre: mystery
Hope you found this useful, and good luck with finding some books!

Read "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" by Stephen R. Donaldson or any of the "GAP" series by the same author. If you like black satire read the "Mission Earth" series by L. Ron Hubbard. There are ten books and hilarious from beginning to end, book one through five. Hard to recommend books not having any idea what you like to read. I love to read also but my focus has been narrowed down over the years to science and fantasy fiction (I love anything Dean Koontz writes, I've read every book Stephen King ever wrote under any name, I have about 300 readers digest leather bound books, and so on. My all time favorite writer though would have to be Stephen R. Donaldson. In the Chronicles you'll hate the main character through the first 3 books ( I did.) Anyway, send a post if you do end up reading this author and let me know what you thought! Good reading to you!

Check out book review websites like www.nancysbooknook.com and www.librarything.com.
There is such a wide variety of reading material out there; one person's favorite book is another person's snoozer. So you need to be more specific about what you're looking for.
What have you read in the past that you really liked? What do those books have in common? What genres and themes do you like? Answer these questions for yourself and you will be closer to finding new reads that you will enjoy.
Some of my personal favorites:
Lightning by Dean Koontz, which is about a girl's "guardian angel," a man who keeps mysteriously showing up at different points throughout her life to save her in some way, but sometimes does not come in times of trauma or crisis, so she can't figure him out...
Watership Down by Richard Adams is about a society of rabbits who journey from their old warren because of the psychic vision of one rabbit, to find a new place to live.
The Magic Kingdom of Landover series by Terry Brooks is a humorous fantasy series that I found enjoyable. Other good fantasy authors are George R.R. Martin, David Eddings, Stephen Donaldson, J.V. Jones, Robin Hobb, Piers Anthony. There is a variety of kinds of fantasy too: some are more action-packed, some are more character-driven; some are humorous, some are more serious.
I recommend David Weber if you like military science fiction. For books about robots, nobody beats Isaac Asimov. These are just a few ideas to get you started. Without knowing more about your specific tastes, it's hard to say.

Well, Harry Potter is always good, but you've probably already read that... Also the Young Wizard series by Diane Duane is good. The Inheritance Trilogy by Christopher Paolini, and anything by Cornelia Funke (The two books out in the Inkheart trilogy, Dragon Rider, and The Theif Lord)...uh...i could go on a lot longer!

The Kite Runner seems to be one of the most recommended books. I read it, and i really liked it. Its realistic, haunting, unexpected, and excellently written. Khaled Hosseini is writing another book expected to come out this May 2007. I really hope I can read it.
My favorite authors are Amy Tan, Adeline Yen Mah, Dave Pelzer, Harper Lee, and many more.
Anyways, if you're interested in Chinese stories, read Amy Tan's books.
Adeline Yen Mah and Dave Pelzer wrote autobiographies of themselves. The stories are touching and sad, but full of ending triumph.
And of course, Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird, which is--in my opinion--the best classic ever!
