Why can't we all just get along?

Oh, a lotsa reasons. I think the root of it all is our inevitably conflicting interests. However, that fact of life, alone, does not make it impossible for us to get along, but (and it's a big but) consider these two huge factors: fear and disregard. If you could do away with those two, I think we actually could get along. If I didn't fear death I could go amongst my enemies on a mission of peace, find out what they want, (add - lack of communication - [due to inability, or unwillingness] to the list) tell what I want, and try to work out a compromise. If my enemies didn't fear me, they could let me approach. Getting rid of fear alone wouldn't be enough though, because some people don't fear death (think suicide-bomber) and look what they're doing to the situation. Disregard for others would also have to be eliminated. Fear and disregard are here to stay. We are only human. We are so very far from being self-aware, and so very far from being beyond the control of the emotional, and self-centered parts of our selves. Some of us, the best of us, might approach enlightenment, but even at best we are so limited. And if we are ever to "get along" a vast majority would have to get our heads around it, and agree to get along; just a few bad apples, and it would all go to hell.

    So, my short list is:

    -conflicting interests

    -fear

    -disregard for others

    -lack of communication

-our imperfect ability to rise above our baser selves (our human limitations)

We're screwed. I've lost faith in humanity's ability to achieve a (even relatively) peaceful world. The only thing I can hope for (and I do) is some miraculously lucky twist of fate.

Hmm... It's because we humans vary in opnions that we may not see eye to eye. As long as someone dosen't think something is right, chances are they wont get along with someone else.

But I think that's the reason there's the word 'tolerance', appreciate others for their differences. Maybe if everyone learned a little tolerance, the twin towers would still be standing.

Learn some tolerance, maybe everyone in the big picture may not get along perfectly, but if you can tolerate others and truely appreciate the differences in ideals, you'll most likely get along better in the small picture and that ends up helping the big picture, doesn't it?

It's not human nature. Every human being has a 'sin problem', we are not perfect which is obvious. Human beings in general are selfish beings, we would rather keep ourselves happy rather than help the general population be happy.

A lot of people make excuses, namely it isn't our fault. But it is, isn't it? It's our choice whether we help others or help ourselves. Another HUGE reason is the different religions. You'd think all these religions that claim 'peace' would push it a bit more but that doesn't happen because we twist God's world and His Word to mean what we wish it would mean (that's not to say all religions are of God other than Christianity).

Why can't we all just get along? It is because a man/woman or a person by nature has one's instincts to survive. S/he ought to live and protect one's life and do accordingly the things needed to be done to achieve one's desires. Therefore, it just shows that each individual has his or her own agenda that somehow may be in conflict with another individual's purpose or desires.

That was what Jack Nicholson, playing the part of the President of the United States in "Mars Attacks", said to a Martian just before it opened fire with its ray gun.

Because we're complex beings with complex emotions, which often result in various opinions and beliefs. When there are differences, conflict is inevitable. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that we're not capable of "getting along," in a sense that it's possible for people to deal with their differences in a peaceful manner.

Because human beings LOVE wallowing in the muck. Being made from "dust" they're probably just trying to get back to or stay close to their "roots"!

Because we are imperfect beings and not happy with our own selves. Thus the judgement of others and the need to feel better than others.

Without ugliness there is no beauty. Hence, if we all got along, there would be no friendship.
