An 80 Gig HD will not make your computer go faster UNLESS hard drive space was a bottleneck for your old system. That is, if your old system has a 20 gig hard drive, and you are using 18 gig, then you have a bottleneck and would speed it up with a larger hard drive.
You can maximize your computers performance by:
1. ONLY allow processes to run that you are actually using. To find out the processes, Right click your task bar and click task manager. Check those processes and get rid of unnecessary, spyware, or unused ones. You can stop programs from starting, with XP, by using the msconfig utility: type msconfig in the run box.
2. Registry scrubbers, such as RegSrubXP at www.majorgeeks.com help if your operating system install is more than a couple months old or you have changed software a lot.
3. Most importantly: Keep your computer free from Malware.

The only way a hard drive can speed anything up is if: Your mother board had the capiblity to run SATA drive and you swithed from an IDE, or if you use duel drives to run a RAID SATA configuration. Adding memory is usually the most common way to help the PC run faster because it does not have to swap information from the drive to memory as often, Running a Scan disk from system tools then doing a defrag. Helps. Only other ways is to get a faster motherboard and processor.
Another thing is A higher memory video card, system can only go as fast as it can load to the screen, The there is the monitor, What is the refreash rate? How many milliseconds can it refreash? 5-8 milisecs is a descent monitor,.

u can speed ur pc by doing the following:
1-remove the non necessary windows startup items by running msconfig.
2-try to run a registry fixer to clean up ur registry.
3-if u ar using xp or visra try to minimize the visual effects from control
panel/system/performance/visua... effects.
4-reduce ur display resolution and don't use a big file for wallpaper.
5-run a good file defragment program like diskeeper which is able to defrag ur hard, the MTF,and the pagefile.
6-set ur windows page file not less than 1,5GB(the value should be 1.5 time more than the ram size).
7-use a good utility like tuneup utilities, this utility include registry cleaner, hard disk cleaner, hard disk doctor, system optimizer, ram optimizing, startup windows tuner, internet optimizing, and windows style tuner.....or u can use a free utility like ccleaner.
8-use an antivirus that only take a few resources from ur system like NOD32(best antivirus ever)...and best free one is AVG.
To speed up ur internet disable all programs that is connected automatically to the internet like antivirus, email outlook, and windows update.
Use a different browser like firefox(best one)and u will really notice a big different in performance than with the IE.

1. Install Microsoft Anti-Spyware
Microsoft AntiSpyWare is one of the better anti-spyware programs on the market and is completely free.
2. Make sure your virus software is up to date and run and complete system scan.
Virus is a common performance thief on windows based computers. They hog resources either by design or wile executing a payload and harvesting address books, files on your hard drive or propagating itself.
3. Look at your sysTray.
The systray is the area next to the clock in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Each icon you see their is running in memory. I recommend right clicking on each icon that you do not need and seeing if there is way to permanently disable the item. Some items will have a 'disable' option, however it will only disable it for that session. Upon logging out and back in you will see the icon again. With items like this you will need to find a 'preferences' or 'configuration' option. If none seems to be available I would go into the application associated with it and check in its preferences.
4. Startup Items
Open windows explorer (windows hot key + e on your keyboard) and browse to 'c:\documents and settings\YOURUSERNAME\startmenu\startp" and delete any icons that you do not running when you log in. You will also want to do this in the 'c:\documents and settings\all users\startmenu\startp" directory after having logged in as administrator.
5. Run a scandisk.
By going to My Computer, and right clicking on your C drive you will be shown a dialog box with a number of tabs. Go to the 'Tools' tab and start a scan disk. This will check your drive for file system errors and correct them. In some cases windows will need exclusive rights to the hard drive and say that it will be run during the next reboot. Tell it ok and then reboot your machine.
