Is it possible for a dog to be mentally challenged?
My son & his girlfriend's puppy, a Lhasa Apso, is dumb as a box of rocks. He will not go outside and do his business, but has no problem with going inside...on my wood floors. The kids have repeatedly done all the standard punishments (paper, rubbing his nose in it, kennelled him) and he continues to do the same behavior. I am going to have to do a vinegar treatment on my floors in hopes that it discourages him. I'm wondering if it's possible he could be the classic "lemon" of a dog?
The puppy is 6 months old. Personally, I think the g/f got ripped off when she bought him because he had spent the majority of his young life in a cage anyway! I agree with many of the various answers...the dog needs to be put up for adoption with someone who does have the time to train him properly. I myself do not take care of this dog because I am disabled.
As for where we got the idea to rub his nose in his poop/pee; that is something that I was told years ago was the way you housebroke a dog. Puppy pads don't work for him.

The dog is not a "lemon" rubbing a dogs nose in its urine/feces does nothing but teaches the dog to hide the next pile. Is it possible that they have failed in learning how to properly train a dog? No offence but just punishing the dog and putting newpaper on the floor doesnt do squat... What needs to be done is this, first when you feed and water the dog immediately take him outside and stay outside repeating "potty words" like "go for a pee, go for a ppo" then when the dog does its business you praise the dog excessively and go back inside. You cant just expect a pup to go outside by itself and know what to do... most puppies are raised indoors and have to be taught to go outside by example. They have to actually go outside with the dog when it is likely he has to go and stay out there encouraging the dog to go when it does you praise and reward. If the dog goes in the house simply pick them up if you catch them in the act, take them outside when they finish praise them. If you dont catch them in the act, show them the accident say NO BAD then take the dog outside again. You can use puppy training pads as well because pups take many months to gain full control over their movements and they literally cannot hold it at all... you put the pads by the door where the dog is taken out to do its business but only when you are not home or asleep. During the day when you are there you need to keep the dog with you and watch him at all times to catch him before he goes inside and take him out every hour or two all day long. Especially right after he eats, drinks or plays for a while. When you go out you have to go with the dog and praise him for going outside.... as it stands it sounds like you are merely punishing the dog without directing him and showing him what to do INSTEAD of going in the house.

first of all you should state how old your dog is. It might take up to a year before is completely house trained. Its probably your method of teaching him thats no good mate. First of all, you never rub his nose in it because that makes him think that its not ok to do it. anywhere. inside or outside. You do not smack a dog for this because its like smacking a baby for doing his business. unfortunately puppies cannot keep it in until at least 7 months depending on the type of breed. Try instead to get some puppy pads. They do work. I had 2 puppies and believe me it was hard to deal with it. Its just a matter of teaching them where they can do it. Be patient, he aint no lemon

Sounds more like a case of ' bad housetraining ' that classic rubbing the nose in it, that you talk about is probably a whole lot of the problem. As well paper training. Crate train the dog, and take him outside. praise him when he goes, and BE OUT THERE with him so you can see him go and praise him. Forget rubbing his nose in it, You know what you are teaching him ?? That you are MEAN, and peeing is bad and a punishable offense.. Not to go outside...
Start fresh and do it right.. No mean stuff!

There are dogs with mental disabilities, but I doubt that is your dogs problem.
Punishments rarely work. Rubbing his nose, hitting with newspaper only makes the dog fearful of his owners. Using the crate for punishment defeats the purpose of using the crate.
Positive reinforcement works best! It is the owners job to train the dog properly. Take him out regularly, and when he does good, reward him with treats and praise. When an accident happens . . AND THEY WILL HAPPEN, you verbally correct the dog IF you catch him in the act by saying "no no !- potty OUTside!" and take him out. Again, if he finishes outside, praise him.
It takes patience and consistency but the dog will get it, if you support him properly.

This dog needs to be put up for adoption to a better home right away! No dog deserves to be treated like that! You are stupid and deserve to have your nose rubbed in your own crap 'cause oops you weren't supposed to use that toilet even though you didn't know that wasn't a toilet!
You're retarded and you and your kid shouldn't be allowed to have pets!

Who told you to rub your dogs nose in his poo? Don't you know that can cause serious infections in their nose and eventually kill your dog? I once had a dog that was dumb as a rock but it took patience and love not abuse that helped her learn to be trained.

Sounds like you are the ones who are mentally challanged. All dogs are trainable, no matter of their brain capacity. You just said that you punish the dog. There's your mistake. Check out this video to give YOU a little brain power:

Maybe your son isn't being consistant with him. If you're not consistant with a dog, you wont get anything accomplished. You also have to be patient, some dogs take longer to catch on than others.
