How do I install a second cd rom drive?

I have a cd recorder and writer on my comp and recently purchased an external dvd writer (samsung). when I installed it it took the place of my cd drive. When I go to copy a dvd it (the dvd writer) is reading the dvd I want to copy but when its done and it tells me "insert blank dvd" its telling me to put it in my "D" drive which is the cdrom drive and it is the only choice. How do I install it so I can use both separately?

Right click on "My Computer" then select Manage. In the window that open you have an option on the right called "Disk Management" You can assign drive letter from here. Assign your CD-RW to D and you external DVD-RW to E. That should solve your problem.

I hope this helps your and good luck getting it running.

Ok, when you copy a disc (any CD or DVD) you'll need 2 drives, the source drive, and the destination drive. So when you copy a DVD, it needs the blank media to write to. I'm not sure if there's a way to change it so that it can write back to the drive you copied the original disc from as I've never had to do that. So if they're both on the system (say D drive is your CD drive and E drive is your DVD drive), then you can use them separately as is, but not to burn DVDs, you'd need another DVD drive for that, unless you can somehow set it up to write back to the drive after inserting a blank disc. The only other way to do so, though (as I just now thought about this) is to create an ISO image (if you have the software to do so), then use that to burn to the drive using the software (such as Nero).

once you've 2 drives (CD or DVD) suitable to both IDE sockets on an IDE cable, then one must have its links set to entice close and the different to slave. in case you in elementary words have a millioncontinual on the cable and it really is links are set to entice close, then you definitely in basic terms connect any othercontinual to the spare connector on cable and set its links to slave. the 1stcontinual would have link-recommendations the position you haven't got any determination, in basic terms 'draw close' or it ought to have a range of 'draw close in a onecontinual device' (a million device on the cable) or 'draw close in a twocontinual device' (its the draw close, yet a 2ndcontinual has been plugged into an identical cable), in which case, set the links of the 1stcontinual for 'draw close in a twocontinual device' and the links of the 2ndcontinual to 'slave'. The floppy isn't some thing to do with it. Its a cable with a diverse type of wires.

Go into the Control Panel and click on the Adminstrive Tools icon

    Click on Computer Management

In the Storage section look under the "Removeable Storage"

You should be able to see your DVD burner and be able to reassign its letter, etc. to make it work properly.
