Have you ever purchased an original piece of artwork?
If so, what was the artists name, the medium of the piece (and price, if you so choose)? I am curious because I am an artist and my work is expensive enough to where I couldn't afford it if I wanted to buy it. Yet most people don't buy original art, even when they might spend $3K on a TV and sound system.
Glitterkitty: I can't afford art either but I buy it and then starve for three weeks.
Pangel: Sent you an email
Betty Boop: I did my undergrad in multi-media design, but it didn't interest me as much as painting
Universalist: I am a painter, but I also dabble in digital photography

Oh, gosh. I'd have to go count, but I think between my hubby and myself we have around 10 or 11 pieces of original art (displayed) in the house, and a few more that aren't displayed (I have to stretch and frame a couple of canvases, and have to find the right mats and frames for two other pieces).
Of those on display, I puchased two - a matted black & white photograph [numbered 2 of 100 - the number 1 was a display piece for the artist], and an acrylic on canvas. Between the two of them I paid around $500. I don't know how much my hubby paid for his piece. The rest have been gifts.
Of the artwork that's not displayed yet, I'm going to guess that the total (for two oils on canvas, unstretched and unframed, one acrylic on paper, and one watercolor on paper) I shelled out $250. They are not by anyone well-known.
No, wait, I've also got those ink and watercolor florals on paper - a set of four - that I haven't decided if I'm keeping or not. Total for those, around $45.
I've also purchased original artwork as gifts for friends and family, and I'm going to guess that I spent around $250 on that, last year.
I don't think you'd recognize any of the artists, as they largely have been local artists just starting to be noticed.
That's probably more detail than you wanted.
BTW, hubby and I are NOT wealthy - we're solidly in the middle of middle-class. Bu we know what our priorities are, and they tend to be art, music, and books.
EDIT: I'm forgetting the artwork I bought in Europe last year. Uhhhhh......(quickly guessing the conversion rates) - I guess I spent around $100 for four small paintings (watercolor on paper, matted but not framed). Hmmm, I guess I'll have to figure out where those are going to go (we're running out of wall space)

No, but I would love to.
I was a vocal performance major my first couple of years of college, so I really enjoyed all the exhibits in the fine arts department.
There was an artist named Jonathan Apple whose work I admired, but I couldn't afford it at the time. I really wish I had a couple of his pieces.
There's a local artist who paints golf courses. My husband loves golf, and they were beautiful paintings. The one I liked most was $3000.00. Can't afford it. We don't spend that on anything else, either, though. We still have the TVs we had when we got married almost 12 years ago....
My compromise is that I bought several black and white posters of various nature scenes with scriptures inscribed at the bottom, had them framed, and they line the hallway. I painted the hallway sort of a brown mustard color and they stand out nicely.
It's not the fine arts department, but it gets me through....
;o)
Source(s): I can't believe I forgot this, but when I managed a Subway, one of the kids who worked for me was an art student and for my birthday one year he gave me a drawing of an old farmhouse in winter. I had it matted and framed and it's hanging in my dining room. - Anonymous1 decade ago
well.... I can't afford to spend 3K on a TV or sound system either...
:)
that being said, I have never been able to buy a piece of original art, but I have created them ....
When I was in highschool I discovered a gift for drawing portraits.. Now I was not a very popular kid, so as a gage - other students started to flock to me begging me to draw their portrait, or their relative, or favourite star or who ever... these were not charicatures either - they were actually very good (hence the instant popularity teehee - I'm not bragging)
Any how - I sold them for $3 each thinking I was getting the better end of the deal HAHAHAHA
I guess the jokes on me..
My aunt still has a portrait of Elvis that I drew hanging in her family room. (she loved him) and hey - I got $25.00 for that one!
have you had showings? would you consider making limited prints? Take heart - one day you will make an impression on someone I'm sure
Would love to see your work - do you have a link?

I haven't. As much as I love art, I couldn't afford to buy expensive original pieces for my home. Prints and copies will have to suffice. I've never spent three grand on a tv or sound system either.
Now if I win the lottery ... I'll look you up and take a "look-see" at some of your original stuff!

I can't afford the art I really would love to have. There have been some sculptures that are to die for, but I can't afford them. This is the art I collect, though....it's black and white photography by Garry Seidel. Some of it looks like it's in color, but it's actually b&w photos that he handpaints. They only range $75-150 each, and I buy 2-3 per art show. I have umm 18, I think.
If I could afford an original piece, I surely would buy it. I love art! I have no talent, but I appreciate the talent of others.
Added: forgot to mention that he specializes in gothic art.

I have a couple that one of my artist friends has given me. However, I bought a few. I bought a weaving from John Trujillo for $35.00 about 11 years ago. I bought a painting from another artist friend for $70.00 and that was 12 or 13 years ago. I don't mention her name because I doubt you've heard of her. I spent $300.00 for my TV and stereo together. I don't buy much original art because I can't afford it and don't have much space to display it properly.

Yes. P. Buckley Moss is a favorite. I have several prints and one original. I paid about 1300 for all. I can not afford such lavish spending now, but at the time, and still do, consider it an investment. Do you paint angels?

The only piece of "art" I've ever bought was from someone on the 16th Street mall in Denver. Cost me $5 and I still have it!
by "someone" I mean two twenty-something people in love bumming money. At least I got something in return.

Yes for art copy's are just as good as the original sometimes better, but when you get into electronics quality really counts. You should have gotten into electronics instead of art.
