Why do many Christians on here insist that prayer must be in supplication to God?

I received some really insulting and demeaning responses for saying that I pray to the whole of humanity in this question:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Apr3U...

According to The Collaborative International Dictionary of English,Praying does NOT solely mean worshiping God, "prayer" is also defined as: 1. The act of praying, or of asking a favor; earnest request or entreaty; hence, a petition or memorial addressed to a court or a legislative body. 2.The form of words used in praying; an expressed petition. I was repeatedly asked who I am praying to (although the answer to that was quite clear in the question itself) and how can I pray if it's not to God? I say, REREAD THE DEFINITION OF PRAYER. Please. I can do it any time, sitting here, going there, whatever. I pray to the whole of humanity in the hope their actions and words will be utilized for the advancement and betterment of mankind.

Update:

I don't believe my prayer can be literally answered, but I believe it is metaphorically every day. The sole definition of an atheist is someone who does not believe in a god or gods, NOT someone who doesn't have the right to pray.

I am not personally offended so much as more and more cognizant of the need to stand up for myself, for atheism, for agnosticism, and for humanism. John Lennon bless the VLR!

Because they're idiots who don't understand their own religion.

So do you want us to say that you and other atheists can and do pray. OK, but praying to God does accomplish a whole lot more. You should try it. You will...someday.

You talk about "insulting and demeaning" responses. Lets examine your prayer.......

Our father, who art in imagination

    Fiction be thy name

    Thy fundies come

    And act real dumb

In life as well as Answers

Give us this day our daily dose of reality

    And forgive us our rational

As we forgive Santa Claus & the Easter Bunny

    Lead us not into self-rightenous

    But deliver us from ignorance

For thine is the fairy tale, the ancient and the pretend, now and forever amen.

You whine about insulting and demeaning?? I wonder why.

one can pray to whatever they want, a piece of wood even. doesnt make it right, but there's no reason you should have been insulted.
