Is the concept of an album dead?

WIth music being reduced to nothing more than a file to be downloaded and played on mp3 players, is this a looming reality?

As a child of the 80's, I am a huge fan of the whole package. The cd sleeve art, the linear notes, the lyrics, the whole physical-ness of it.

I use iTunes, of course, but it bothers me to think that we soon won't need newspapers, books, DVD's, or CD's, everything will be digital.

Then, a million years from now, aliens will come to Earth, and there will be no remains of our vast knowledge and creativity.. it will all have been lost when the electricity went out...

Well, as you say, the concept is dying. It's not dead though. I, like you, enjoy having an "album". I like to listen to one band play their music for an hour or so. It just feels good some times.

And, regardless of the trends, musicians are still putting them out, so obviously there's still demand. Music stores still exist and they still sell CDs.

In the 80's there were people who enjoyed "mix tapes" a lot, and there were people who could only handle so much. Same thing now.

Not only do you get to listen to a favourite band with an album, but you get that particular phase of the band. Like, I'm still looking forward to the release of a particular album, because I'm wondering what the band has been creating lately. I just want to sit down and listen to what they have to play for me.

One good thing about artists possibly not making as much money now as they used to do to the ease of copying music, is that if it gets too bad, then bands will have to tour more. That's cool. Instead of laying back, reaping the benefit of album sales, they can get out on the road and play stuff for us live.

I love the whole package too-- in fact I found it hard to even adjust to CDs! LPs you could really hold on to, and there was so much cool packaging. Gatefolds, posters, etc!

You make a good point about the lasting, tangible evidence too. At this point we aren't even sure how quickly CDs will deteriorate.

Time marches on.. Guess we have to accept the good with the bad. I'm sure lots of people were upset when records went from cylinders to flat discs!

I was born in '81, but I like it better this way. There's usually only 1 or 2 good songs on most albums/cd's anyway.

First of all, the aliens won't beat us, have you ever seen the movie independence day. lol. But, ya, soon there will be no such thing as an album when songs can just be instantly loaded onto internet websites.
