Anyone else think TV is bad for you?
Aside from the obvious worry about obesity and lack of exercise, I read a while back that too much TV (i.e. more than an hour a day) can cause mental health problems, including the potential for the early onset of Alzheimer's, in today's children.
I've stopped watching TV myself (it broke and I've not replaced it) for the last couple of months and I've been more alert, creative and cheerful.
Throw away the shackles and release yourself from your TV!
So, is TV bad for you, or is it, in moderation, a useful tool?
What do you think?

I wouldn't say it is bad for you, but it isn't good for you either. If you are a sensible person (which I assume you are) then the TV won't really do you any damage. You aren't going to sit and watch it 24/7, never leave the couch and start eating crappy food because of it, so it alone won't make you obese.
TV does have advantages: it provides a look at things and places you might never see otherwise (National Geographic Channel), teaches you things you mighn't have learned otherwise (Discovery Channel, Discovery Science), and it gives you a bit of a laugh when you are bored and your friends are busy (a lot of other channels). It also allows people to make money by advertising, it allows you to buy products from the shopping channels that you wouldn't find on the high street (so they say), it is a way to keep some children quite for a while whilst the parents stop for a tea or coffee, and it can help reinforce a young child's education. It also provides an instant audio-visual media for important news announcements.
I could keep going but I don't want to bore you. My point is that TVs are not bad - people are; if people sit in front of the TV all their lives and eat microwavable pizza every mealtime, that is their fault, not the TV's fault.

In moderation, TV is an excellent way to spend time with your friends, like the 'super bowl' party some of us have. Also when used in moderation, TV can be a source of releasing pent up tension especially when you happen to watch a sitcom. There may be more benefits but I do have a warning for you, if you do have a TV there will be temptation to get addicted to it, so as long as you have powerful self control, TV should be fine.

I don't think TV is bad for you. I think bad habits are bad for you.
A TV doesn't make anyone park on the couch and ingest hours of worthless banter, a person decides for themselves.
I think a TV can be a great medium, but it shouldn't be the main attraction in one's life.

I'm thinking more and more that it's a bad thing and a bit of a life waster. It's also increasingly loaded with senseless muck. However, it is useful if you can discipline yourself to use it moderately.

I concur with the great Groucho Marx on this. Groucho stated that he found TV "Extremely educational":
"Every time someone switches it on , I go into another room and read a book!!!"

Yes, but not as bad as this. Most of us could be done for corrupting miners let alone minors.

I ate several tv's and they weren't that unhealthy. Mind you, they didn't half repeat on me.
Cheers, Steve.
