Actually, appliances are better for the bridal shower, rather than as a wedding gift. Find out if the bride to be is registered, and you can get both gifts from the registry choices.

Appliances are better for a wedding gift.
Get the bride something "decorative" that she registered for.
I get the most compliments at parties I host on a 3 tier cake stand that I received as a shower gift. It makes me think of the givers...

depending upon the person...most times gifts from the registry are also given at the bridal shower, if the bride is a close friend something special is better, for example my wife's friends gave her a large pic frame of her single days hanging out with friends

As a former bride and a guest at MANY bridal showers I have only this advice - STICK TO THE REGISTRY. It will make your life much easier as well as theirs as you know that it will definitely be something they want or need. Some brides are literally starting from scratch when setting up a household and/or they may be short on space. If you want to expand on anything that listed in their registry (put in a bottle of wine with the wine opener or bar set they asked for), that would be fine. Be careful with risque gifts as you don't want the bride to have to open edible underwear in front of grandma! Trust me, she'll hate you for it.

Look at their bridal registry. Give them what they said they want.
P.S. You might wrap the gifts in tea towels, sort of Japanese style. That way they get two gifts in one. I didn't register for tea towels, but they are some of the most used of the "unexpected" gifts.

I recommend silverware or a set of dishes.
As for appliances...I don't think so because someone might get
you a black fridge and a white oven....
I definitely would not get them a gift card, too impersonal.

Depends on what they askd for or need!
Get them a basket with a bottle of wine and some wine glasses so they can have a picnic together!
It's different!

I like to buy glass photo frames at family dollar, and they say true love and wedding day or families.
