Teachers and Guns?

I've read other people's answers to similar questions so I'm sort of changing this a little. Let's say that the Teacher has a gun and is trained to use it but not to KILL anyone, just slow them down. Injur them to the point of that shooter not being able to shoot. A teacher lost his life because he stood on one side of the door while his students evacuated and he attempted to stop the shooter from hurting any of them. If he'd had the chance and could have shot his arm or leg and just got him down, would he? Would you? How is it not a possible solution to give teachers a weapon for defense? Yes, there are chances a student would try to get it or whatever but maybe those teachers can read the signs of their corrupt students a little better from now on too! What's up with letting a student write horrible things and be completly alone all the time and thinking it's ok??

Well, between teachers and students it should still be prohibited, because if a teacher brings a gun to school, then that triggers the student signals that "okay, if my teacher brings a gun, it's okay for me to bring one too." so then they'll start this little protest, causes problems, and causes a big whole mess due to inequalities of staff and students and their learning environment.

Well, people did report the kid: teachers, roommates, and fellow students. The police simply came around and chatted with him a few times, and he had a short stay in a mental hospital. The campus administrators chose to keep him on, in spite of all of this. Please don't blame the teachers; they're rarely listened to when they do bring up concerns.

Problem is, campuses are often more concerned with tuition dollars than with the health and well-being of their students. We used to have an office here for reporting problem students, but no more! (I teach at a state university) But when we did have one, I could never get any follow-up information on whether or not my students were being treated. And one student, who was stalked by another student in my class, couldn't get info on whether he was even punished, nor could I. I even had physical evidence of his stalking, since he submitted a piece of writing that detailed how much he loved stalking her! I went straight to the authorities on it, as soon as I notified her.

As for guns, I would honestly rather have one than not; however, I believe that it carries a heavy responsibility, and that thorough safety, legal, and marksmanship training should be completed for all who wish to carry. If they wish to train themselves, they should be able to pass a test on the matters (including a physical demonstration which shows they can load, clean, shoot, etc.).

Perhaps I could shoot him, perhaps not. We never really know until the situation hits.

Well, i think teachers could have weapons to defend themselves and their students, but it shouldnt be a weapon for killing, rather a weapon designed to stop someone and put them down for good. The military and police departments in big cities have weapons like this, but im not sure if they will ever allow professors or teachers at schools to have them. Anyone can go crazy! Who's to say that just because they are a teacher, that they wont lose their cool and decided to do harm to someone.

This kinda stuff is always gonna happen it seems...

I don't know. I think that if just ONE person would have had a gun and knew how to use it, many of these deaths could have been avoided. Not all of us have the b*** to kill someone, or just stop them in their tracks, but some of us would. I've been around guns for a long time, I know how to use one, and yes, I would have stopped that guy. I don't want to depend on others to protect me and mine. I depend on myself. We live out in the country. It would takes cops 20 to 30 minutes to come to me, by that time, I'd be dead. I want to take care of myself. So, maybe a teacher should have a gun, maybe a student should have a gun. Who can you trust with a gun? Hmm, I don't know how you can know that answer for sure.

First, guns on school campuses are illegal.

Second, people trained to "use" guns know that you do not shoot to maim, you are trained to shoot to kill. Real life is not a TV show.

Third, guns on school campuses SHOULD BE illegal.

Four, I hear your empathy, but a psycho person did a psycho thing.

It was a tragedy and the system failed VT; it really doesn't have anything to do with guns!

    Good luck....

i think he probably would have to protect his students

if i had the responsibility to take care of the students then i would have took the necessary action to protect them
