what is the average recovery and rehabilitation time for a knee replacement?

I'm a physical therapist.
Typically, people are in the hospital about 3 days after a knee replacement. Depending on how you're doing, you may go home from there or go to a rehab facility. If going to a rehab facility, typically patients stay about 2 weeks after a knee replacement. Healing time can vary..staples are taken out after 2 weeks. Your range of motion comes back gradually in most cases, it can take anywhere from 4-5 days to 6 months to get back to 'normal'. Most people are doing quite well after a month or so, and can stop using an assistive device (walker, cane, etc) to help them walk. Depends on how active you are now, how out of shape you are, and how motivated you are to do your exercises post-operation. It's not an easy recovery, but worth it if you're willing to put in the hard work.
